The 10,000 sq. ft. MAPS facility was part of a large addition to Highland Park High School. Michael worked with archects from Stantec to design the entire space, which includes 2 spacious classrooms, a state-of-the-art makerspace, a large formal boardroom, a small conference room, a collaboration zone, a kitchenette, and offices. Michael also designed the logo for the MAPS program.
The MAPS program allows juniors and seniors to explore professional interests, gain hands-on experience from industry leaders and experts, and earn valuable credits needed for graduation.
After surveying over 600 students, Michael and his team designed the programmatic and curricular framework for the 4 current MAPS Focus Areas: Brain Science and Health, Business Design and Leadership, Engineering Design, and Environmental Architecture.
Scottie Joe's Coffee Shop is a student-led venture housed in the MAPS facility in Highland Park High School. Thanks to a generous gift from The Credit Union of Texas, a full-service coffee bar was built in year 3 of the program. The operation is a partnership between the MAPS program and the high school 18+ transition program. The MAPS Business Design and Leadership class was instrumental in the start-up and oversees the managerial components. The 18+ young adults gain valuable work experience by running the coffee shop and serving the students, faculty, and visiting community members.
