A variety of sources will be utilized in the sixth grade reading program, including four NYS reading modules, novels and short stories from a variety of genres, research materials, and library books. Students will explore a variety of fiction genres, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery, survival, fantasy, and Greek myths. We will also read, discuss and write about expository, argumentative, and informational works of non-fiction. Throughout the year, in addition to class assignments and activities, students will periodically be required to read a book independently and complete a project or written assignment based on that book.
Reading - The goal of this course is to inspire active, lifelong, independent readers who explore diverse genres.
By the end of the school- year, your child will be able to:
Cite textual evidence to support an analysis of text
Explore literary and informational texts
Determine theme / central idea and point of view in literary and informational texts
Analyze the role of a particular sentence, paragraph, stanza, chapter, scene, or section and how it contributes to the development of theme/central idea, plot, setting, etc.
