Course Overview
The course focuses around the primary areas of English Language Arts and the Common Core Learning Standards, Reading literature, reading informational texts, argumentative writing, narrative writing, and informational writing. The goal is for individual student improvement and the ultimate objective is to reach mastery in each of these areas. We will guide you in reaching your highest potential. In class we are a community of readers, writers, learners and thinkers. Do your best and you will learn and improve in many ways. Our hope is that this year provides you with meaningful challenges and opportunities for exploration, growth and achievement. Give it your all every day, whether we are in class together, or at home learning remotely.
Course Objectives

By the end of the school- year, your child will be able to:
6.W.1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
6.W.2: Write informative / explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
6.W.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details and sequencing.

Sentence Structure: types of sentences, subject, predicate, fragments, run-on
Parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns
Paragraph structure
Writing mechanics: capitalization, punctuation, proper use of quotations, writing dialogue
Writing skills: creative writing, non-fiction writing (expository, argumentative, and informational), business letter, compare and contrast, note-taking, summarizing
Greek Myths
Scholastic Scope (author’s craft, text structure, text evidence, mood, central ideas, summarizing)
Writer’s Workshop (writer’s notebook should be decorated for inspiration)
Poetry
Wordly Wise Vocabulary
Public speaking
Digital Readworks will be done in all subject areas
