Dating as we know it is a very modern idea, especially for teenagers. Please read "Colonial Courtship" (pgs 90/91) to get a glimpse of the different ways people 'courted' (dated) and got married. You are required to answer questions 1 & 2 in the Thinking Critically box (bottom of pg 90).
The first question will ask you to compare the courtship rituals of different colonial populations and the second will ask you to compare them to dating/courtship rituals of today.

You have been hearing (& saying) the Pledge of Allegiance ever since kindergarten. This assignment asks you to explore this Pledge more closely & in doing so, gain a greater understanding of the history of the Pledge itself & how it has been used since it was created.

Why might society think this is a good idea? What do you believe society is hoping to achieve through this process? Can this be achieved through any other means/ What might some of the advantages to be gained from it? What positive outcomes might arise from saying it everyday? Why might some protest saying it? What negative outcomes might arise from saying it everyday?

While America was winning new territories, the argument over slavery divided the nation. The goal of abolition (anti-slavery) groups was to prevent slavery from spreading. Some wanted to abolish slavery altogether. The puzzle (right) presents some of the aspects of slavery and the fight for abolition. You are to create a map on a poster board showing major events of a battle, write a description (12 pt font & double spaced) of the battle and it's outcome and must include a bibliography/work cited page. You can choose to write from the perspective of either the Union or Confederate General leading their forces.
