This class is considered the first course in what could be a four-year art sequence. This is an advanced course and moves at a relatively fast pace. Throughout the year we will cover the primary drawing concepts of line, value, space and composition. These are the foundational tools that you will use throughout this year and in the years ahead, regardless of what type of art you make or what materials you use.
First semester is primarily black and white work with an emphasis on skill building, while the second semester is more about developing concepts and working with some color. Over the course of the year we will work with pencil, charcoal, graphite, ink, oil pastel, collage and watercolor. I try to introduce as many new concepts and materials as possible to begin to broaden your idea of what drawing and art can be.
This year, most of the class will consist of weekly sketchbook assignments focusing on specific skills and concepts. Ideally, we will be able to get into some more developed, long-term projects as the year progresses.
