Extra Credit is for BOTH 7th and 8th Grade students.

7th & 8th Grade Science:  Mrs. Castner/Mr. Madeline

Select a Science related book off the Book Case in back of room, use a magazine, or find your book.  If it is a small book, read the entire book; if a large book, choose a chapter or section.  You can also use the internet for a Science related article.  Then, write a detailed report in paragraph form answering the following questions in sentence form:

1.  Why did you choose this book.

2.  One or two things you learned after reading the book.

3.  How did the illustrations in the book help you?

4.  Reasons why you would recommend, or not recommend this book to others?  5.  If you could speak wit the author, what specific detail(s) would you ask?

6.  Why would you ask the author that specific question?

PLEASE print the report neatly or type the report double spaced with one inch margins and share it with Mrs. Castner or Mrs. Shipman.  Three book reports PER nine week period.  Book report can earn UP TO 5 extra bonus points.  Following is a GREAT example of a report that earned 5 points.

NAME:  ___________________________

Period: _______

Book: Science, S.W. Advantage

Chapter: Human Anatomy Section: Respiratory System

I chose to read this book because my dad bought a whole series of resource books and this one is about science topics. I chose to read the chapter about the respiratory system.  I wanted to learn more about what it is, how it works, and the organs that make up the respiratory system.  After reading, I learned that the brain has a role in the respiratory system.  The brain controls the rate and depth of breathing.  I also learned that the nasal passages are lined with tiny hairlike structures called cilia and a sticky substance called mucus.  Cilia and mucus filters dust and dirt from the air when we inhale.

With the illustrations in the book, I can understand a complicated subject even more because I am able to see what the structures look like and where they are in the body. Plus, the illustrations made the reading more interesting. Seeing the structures described by the words made me want to learn about other systems in the body.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone.  This book has a lot of categories about different things relating to science.  For example, you can learn about biology, chemistry, earth science, ecology, physics, and space science in this one book. It is a useful resource to use when you get stuck on the different subjects of science. If I could speak with the author, I would ask if he/she had other books on other subjects like this one.  If so, those can really help someone study.

Bring in a display for the display case in the room with a detailed report that you will read out loud to the class.  The display remains in the case for one week.  IF YOU FORGET TO BRING IN YOUR DISPLAY, points will be deducted for each day LATE OFF YOUR CURRENT POINT STANDING!

* Display case can earn up to 10 extra bonus points. If you sign up for the display case, you need to be responsible and follow through.  One Display per semester.  Notify Mrs. Castner and she will schedule your time slot.

PLEASE print the report neatly or type the report double spaced with one inch margins.  If typed, share with Mrs. Castner PLUS print out a copy to put in the case along with your display.  Report in paragraphs using sentences.  Report MUST INCLUDE ALL of THE FOLLOWING:

1,  Where you collected, found, or acquired the collection.

2.  Reason why you have this collection.

3.  How the collection RELATES to any field of Science.

4.  Are you still adding to this collection and why? If you aren’t, why not?

5.  When did you start the collection, or how long did it take you to collect the item(s).

6.  Any other detail(s) you would like to provide the class.
