THE NINE HELLS
Long before the events of The Brother’s War, the world that would come to be Phyrexia was a lush and beautiful paradise. An artificial plane with nine layers created by a long-dead draconic planeswalker, the plane was gifted to the Thran physician Yawgmoth by the planeswalker Dyfed. Yawgmoth would come to shape the plane with a combination of magic and science, and populate it with phthisis-infected Thran from Dominaria. Over time, these Thran humans were ‘cured’ of their ailments by Yawgmoth via a process called ‘phyresis’, and in time the entire plane followed suit, becoming a vast mechanical hellscape of blood, metal, and oil where machinery replaced the organic and obedience replaced individualism. Over hundreds of years, Phyrexia evolved into one of the most powerful planes the multiverse has ever known, focused only on war and conquest via massive war machines and biological plagues. Yawgmoth himself eventually became an entity of pure black mana, the avatar of the plane and god amongst the Phyrexians. Phyrexia was eventually destroyed by the efforts of the planeswalkers Urza, Freyalise, Taysir, Lord Windgrace, and others, via the detonation of soul bombs across the plane during the events of The Invasion of Dominaria.
