Introduction
This deck is part of the Pauper Decks, which are made from only common cards. The great thing about Pauper is the majority of the cards are cheap to buy, and are still strong as there are quite a lot of good common cards over Magic's history.
Key Strategy
Urzatron is a classic control-combo deck that revolves around assembling the powerful "Urza lands"—Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower—to generate massive amounts of mana. With this mana, the deck can dominate the late game by casting powerful spells and leveraging card advantage to control the board and eventually win the game.
Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, Urza's Tower: The core of the deck, these lands are what give the deck its name. When all three are in play, they generate a total of seven colorless mana, allowing you to cast large spells and activate abilities that would otherwise be out of reach.
Expedition Map and Crop Rotation: These cards are essential for finding your Urza lands and assembling your "tron" as quickly as possible. Expedition Map lets you search for any land, making it the most reliable way to find missing pieces. Crop Rotation can instantly put the missing land into play, often catching opponents off guard.
Energy Refractor: This card helps you convert your colorless mana from the Urza lands into colored mana, which is crucial for casting your blue and green spells. It also draws a card when it enters the battlefield, helping you dig deeper into your deck.
Ghostly Flicker and Ephemerate: These are the key combo pieces of the deck. Ghostly Flicker can be used to repeatedly blink your Mulldrifter or Mnemonic Wall to draw cards and recycle spells. Ephemerate serves a similar role, giving you repeated value from your creatures.
Mulldrifter and Mnemonic Wall: Mulldrifter is your primary source of card draw, and Mnemonic Wall allows you to reuse your powerful instants and sorceries, particularly Ghostly Flicker. Together, they form a soft lock, allowing you to generate card advantage and control the game.
Mystical Teachings: This card allows you to search your deck for key instants and flashback it later for additional value. It’s a critical tool for finding whatever answer or combo piece you need at any given moment.
Dinrova Horror: A late-game finisher and board control tool, Dinrova Horror can bounce a permanent and force your opponent to discard a card, disrupting their board and hand simultaneously. With enough mana, you can repeatedly blink Dinrova Horror to lock down the opponent's board.
Compulsive Research, Impulse, and Sea Gate Oracle: These cards help you dig through your deck to find your lands, key spells, and combo pieces. Impulse is especially powerful for digging four cards deep at instant speed, and Compulsive Research provides a significant draw boost.
Moment's Peace and Weather the Storm: These are your defensive tools. Moment's Peace can stall aggressive decks by preventing combat damage for two turns, while Weather the Storm can help you recover life against burn decks or aggressive strategies.
Pulse of Murasa: This card is great for recurring your creatures or lands while also gaining you six life, providing both value and survivability in grindy matchups.
Urzatron aims to control the game by assembling the "tron" lands and using the massive mana advantage to cast big spells, draw cards, and repeatedly use powerful effects.
Early Game: Your focus in the early game is to assemble your Urza lands as quickly as possible. Use Expedition Map and Crop Rotation to search for the missing pieces. Cast Impulse or Sea Gate Oracle to dig deeper into your deck and find what you need. Defend against early aggression with Moment's Peace and Prohibit.
Mid Game: Once you’ve assembled your Urza lands, start leveraging your mana advantage by casting Mulldrifter to draw cards and establish board presence. Use Mystical Teachings to find the specific cards you need, whether it's Ghostly Flicker for your combo or Moment's Peace to survive another turn.
Late Game: With your lands fully assembled, you can start using Ghostly Flicker in combination with Mnemonic Wall and Mulldrifter to generate overwhelming card advantage. Dinrova Horror can be used to lock down your opponent’s board, and Pulse of Murasa ensures you don’t run out of resources. If your life total is low, a well-timed Weather the Storm can swing the game back in your favor.
Look for hands that include at least two Urza lands and a way to find the third, such as Expedition Map or Impulse. You also want to have some early interaction, like Prohibit or Moment's Peace, to keep yourself safe while you set up. A hand with Mulldrifter or Sea Gate Oracle is also strong, as these cards help you dig for the pieces you need.
Urzatron is a powerful control-combo deck that rewards careful planning and resource management. Once the Urza lands are assembled, the deck's ability to generate massive mana and repeatedly use powerful effects can quickly overwhelm opponents. Whether you’re drawing cards with Mulldrifter, locking down the board with Dinrova Horror, or gaining life with Weather the Storm, this deck has the tools to handle a wide variety of situations and opponents.
