Introduction
This deck was made because it has a personal meaning to Mr Hills (me) . This was one of the decks used when I played competitively, and I have made them again so other people can experience what MTG was like at the time, and can share my passion for the game.
This deck list specifically was made by me, I remade it from memory so some ratios of cards might be slightly off. It was played during the 2009 Standard Format.
This is probably my most favourite deck to play, as I won a lot of card store events with it, and a good friend of mine first introduced me to the deck. The huge card advantage play style of this deck has influenced the way I play MTG ever since.
Key Strategy
The Jund Midrange deck is a versatile and adaptive strategy that balances early-game aggression with powerful late-game threats. The core of this deck revolves around efficient removal and solid creature plays, designed to keep opponents off balance and seize control of the game as it progresses.
Early to Mid-Game Control
In the early and mid-game, focus on removing your opponent's threats and leveraging your own creatures for advantageous trades. Lightning Bolt, Terminate, and Maelstrom Pulse provide flexible removal options to deal with various threats, while Blightning disrupts your opponent’s hand and provides additional damage. Bloodbraid Elf is a key card here, offering both aggressive attacks and a cascade effect that can find additional value plays, like Bituminous Blast, for further card advantage and removal.
Aggressive Options
Jund Midrange has the flexibility to be aggressive early if the situation allows. Putrid Leech can serve as both an early aggressor and a way to trade life for additional power when needed. Sprouting Thrinax offers a reliable creature that creates value even when it dies, providing tokens to continue applying pressure. Anathemancer is a great option to punish opponents with a lot of non-basic lands, delivering significant damage in the right matchup.
Late-Game Power
In the late game, the deck’s powerful threats come into play. Broodmate Dragon provides both a formidable flyer and a pair of flying creatures to finish off opponents. Resounding Thunder and Murderous Redcap offer additional damage and flexibility, with the latter also providing a persistent removal option.
Strategy and Adaptation
Jund Midrange excels due to its adaptability. It can switch between controlling the game early and applying pressure when the opportunity arises. The deck thrives on efficient removal and value creatures, which allow it to maintain a solid board presence and outlast opponents.
Jund is not just a deck type but a mindset and a lifestyle for many who played during its heyday. It broke the mold of traditional archetypes by integrating midrange strategies, giving it a favorable matchup against aggro, control, and combo decks. The deck’s ability to adapt and shift between aggression and control makes it a powerful choice for a variety of matchups.
Look for Bloodbraid Elf and Bituminous Blast early to maximize your cascade potential, and leverage your removal spells to keep your opponent’s strategy in check. Putrid Leech and Sprouting Thrinax are key creatures for gaining early advantage and maintaining board presence, while Broodmate Dragon serves as a strong finisher to close out games.
