Introduction
This deck was made because it has a personal meaning to Mr Hills (me) . This was one of the decks used when I played competitively, and I have made them again so other people can experience what MTG was like at the time, and can share my passion for the game.
This deck list specifically was taken from Todd Aaron, and was played during the 2009 US Regionals Standard Format.
Key Strategy
The Turbofog deck is a control-oriented strategy designed to outlast opponents by preventing combat damage and exploiting card draw mechanics to secure victory. The core strategy revolves around creating a defensive stalwart that frustrates opponents while leveraging card draw to ensure you outlast them.
Early Game Defense and Setup: Begin by establishing your defense with cards like Holy Day and Batwing Brume, which prevent combat damage and discourage your opponent from attacking. Font of Mythos and Howling Mine are crucial for accelerating card draw, ensuring you have a steady stream of resources while forcing your opponent to draw more cards. The deck’s early defense is bolstered by Mistvein Borderpost and Fieldmist Borderpost, which help with mana fixing and also serve as additional defensive tools.
Mid-Game Control: As the game progresses, utilize Cryptic Command and Negate to counteract key spells and protect your board state. Jace Beleren provides card advantage and can help you dig deeper into your deck to find necessary answers. Runed Halo offers targeted protection against specific threats, while Pollen Lullaby and other fog effects ensure that combat damage remains minimal.
Late Game Advantage: In the late game, Tezzeret the Seeker offers versatility by searching for key artifacts or enabling additional mana production. Reliquary Tower prevents you from discarding cards due to a full hand, which is particularly useful given the amount of card draw in the deck. Wrath of God serves as a powerful board wipe to clear any remaining threats and reset the battlefield.
Key Interactions:
Card Draw + Fog Effects: Combine Font of Mythos and Howling Mine with fog effects like Holy Day and Batwing Brume to maintain card advantage while keeping your opponent’s creatures at bay.
Cryptic Command + Negate: Use Cryptic Command and Negate to protect your fog effects and key spells, ensuring that your defensive strategy remains intact.
Reliquary Tower: This card is vital for managing your large hand size from continuous card draw, allowing you to keep critical cards without worry.
The Turbofog deck excels in creating a frustrating experience for opponents by stalling combat and leveraging card draw to maintain control. With careful play and strategic use of fog effects and card advantage, you can outlast your opponent and secure victory through sheer endurance and strategic defense.
