Introduction
This deck was made because it has a personal meaning to Mr Hills (me) . This was one of the decks used when I played competitively, and I have made them again so other people can experience what MTG was like at the time, and can share my passion for the game.
This deck list specifically was taken from Will Craddock, and was played during the 2011 Extended format.
Key Strategy
The Five Colour Cascade deck thrives on maximizing the value of its spells through the Cascade mechanic. This powerful ability allows you to reveal cards from the top of your deck until you find one with a lower mana cost, casting it for free. This can lead to explosive turns where you generate significant value from a single spell, outpacing your opponent in terms of resources and board presence.
Early Game Setup
In the early game, focus on establishing a board presence and finding key cards to set up for your Cascade turns. While the deck’s mana base includes several lands that enter the battlefield tapped, the high-impact three-drops become crucial. Bloodbraid Elf is a standout card here, as its Cascade ability can start a chain of value, setting up for more impactful plays.
Cascade Chain Reactions
The heart of the deck’s strategy revolves around leveraging Cascade to generate multiple powerful effects from a single spell. Key Cascade cards include:
Bloodbraid Elf: A high-impact creature with Cascade that can trigger further spells, providing both a solid attacker and a means to chain into other powerful cards.
Bituminous Blast: This spell not only deals damage to a creature but also cascades into another card, amplifying its value.
Captured Sunlight: This card allows you to dig deeper into your deck, potentially setting up further Cascade chains.
Synergy and Power Plays
One of the most exciting aspects of the deck is the potential for explosive Cascade chains. A memorable play might involve cascading from Enigma Sphinx into Enlisted Wurm, followed by Bituminous Blast, and finishing with Bloodbraid Elf or Sprouting Thrinax. This sequence can flood the board with creatures and remove threats, all for a relatively low mana investment.
High-Impact Cards
Enigma Sphinx: Offers a powerful effect when it dies, putting other key cards back into your hand.
Enlisted Wurm: Provides both a substantial creature presence and the ability to find additional spells or creatures.
Cruel Ultimatum: A game-changing spell that can potentially swing the game in your favor by draining your opponent’s resources and gaining significant advantages for yourself.
Mid-Game Adaptations
The deck's mid-game strategy involves taking advantage of the value generated from Cascade to build a strong board presence and apply pressure. Garruk Wildspeaker and Jace, the Mind Sculptor offer additional versatility, with Garruk providing ramp and token generation, and Jace offering card draw and control options.
Closing the Game
The deck excels at closing out games through its Cascade chains and high-impact spells. By generating multiple advantageous effects from a single spell, you can overwhelm your opponent and secure a victory with a combination of creatures and spells. The ability to trigger powerful cards like Enigma Sphinx and Enlisted Wurm ensures that you can dominate the battlefield and outlast your opponent.
Personal Touch
This deck holds special significance as it reflects a nostalgic experience with Cascade strategies, showcasing the thrill of setting up complex and rewarding plays. Whether you’re re-living fond memories or discovering the excitement of Cascade for the first time, the deck’s ability to generate immense value and create memorable moments makes it a standout choice for any Magic player.
