This year we are raising money to build an inclusive, nature-inspired playground with the objective to include opportunities for EVERYONE! As a community playground it will meet the needs of children throughout our county. There were over 26,000 students in Livingston County during the 2019/2020 school year. This included 4,280 students who participated in Early-On, Early Childhood Special Education, and Special Education programs
Keeping all of these community members in mind, the playground will be thoughtfully designed to provide a safe place where children of all abilities can play together and will be developmentally appropriate for children with and without disabilities by offering a wide range of challenging play opportunities. The focus will be on abilities not disabilities. Everything will be accessible, however the user’s unique abilities will determine what they can do. Successful playgrounds offer experiences that may not be mastered immediately. They offer opportunities for users to push themselves thereby building self-esteem.
The inclusive design of our playground will allow for people of all abilities to play together. In addition, this playground will consist of natural elements and textures such as logs, stumps, ropes, boulders, and plants. Natural playgrounds present opportunities for individual exploration and discovery as well as collaborative play. While playing at our playground, children will not only develop physical skills but also imagination and problem-solving skills through self-directed play. This playground will also appeal to children of various ages and abilities and will foster socialization among groups of children who might not otherwise interact.
Our inclusive playground will be built at Genoa Park. This popular destination features a sled hill, 0.66 mile walking path, two regulation sized athletic fields, picnic tables, a pavilion with accessible heated bathrooms, a warming area, and an existing playground. Within the heart of Livingston County, the beautiful community of Genoa Township features lakes and wetlands, rolling hills and meadows, state parks and wildlife at the crossroads of two major highways, US‐23 and I‐96. Genoa Township is also home to an abundance of commercial, residential, and industrial business.
