WELCOME, FIFTH GRADERS!
WELCOME, FIFTH GRADERS!
I'm so happy that you're here!
Welcome to 5th grade technology! As the oldest students in the school, the fifth graders have many opportunities to learn and show what they know in the world of technology. We start our year learning about the new iPads and how to customize and use them to help us stay organized. As the year goes on, we learn advanced tools in the Google suite that will help us in school and beyond. We will be working on a special project for the NJSBA STEAM Tank this year in class, where students learn the Engineering Design Process as they work together in cooperative groups to solve real-world problems. More information about STEAM Tank can be found here, and school-wide information will be sent out as the year goes on.
We will be continuing to practice typing this year using a new program called Typesy, and encourage students to practice typing when they can. We will expand on our knowledge of coding, along with some new robotics lessons and digital citizenship.
Students also have the opportunity to sign up for the Podcast club this year! This after school club will meet weekly, with some recordings taking place during the school day. We have been working on our podcast over the last few years and the students really take ownership and make this project their own- we can't wait to see what the podcast will become this year!
Fifth grade is going to be fun and productive in the technology lab this year!

Typing/WPM
This year, we will be using different programs to learn and practice our typing skills.
WPM= Words Per Minute
Our goal as fifth graders is to reach at least 30 WPM on a typing test. That's not the only goal, though! We will set individual goals to try and get our own Personal Best. What's your typing goal?
I will be checking your WPM once per month and updating the leaderboards outside my classroom. Make sure you are practicing on LESSONS to improve your WPM!
We start the year using Typing Pal, Typing.com, or Typing Club and learning LESSONS. Once December hits, if you can reach 40 WPM on a test, you may play typing games during class. :)
