The Service as Action project focuses on community and service and gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning. As a consolidation of learning, the community project engages in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community. The Service as Action project is completed individually or in groups of a maximum of three students from the same eighth grade study lab. The choice of the topic for the project is made in consultation with an IB teacher who has the responsibility for supervising the development of the project according to the Assessment Criteria (provided to students in Study Lab and/or Enrichment) which is based on IBO guidelines.
Students will define a goal based on their personal interests and identify their prior learning and subject-specific knowledge. Refining their research skills and practicing digital literacy, students will learn more about the community need they have selected.
After investigating the community need, students will develop a proposal for action. They will plan and record the development process while demonstrating self-management skills.
It's time to get it done! Students will demonstrate their service as action, creating a product or producing an outcome that involves the community outside of Lanier Middle School. Students will demonstrate thinking, communication, and social skills.
After taking action, students then reflect on their development as an IB learner. They will evaluate the quality of the service as action, and reflect on the journey of the past several months to accomplish their IB community project.
