Club Description: Let Me Ponder, a haven for intellectual exploration and philosophical discourse. Our diverse group of enthusiasts comes together to engage in thought-provoking discussions and delve into a curated selection of texts that span the vast landscape of philosophical thought.
Our club attracts individuals with a passion for intellectual inquiry, and we've explored works ranging from the timeless wisdom of Marcus Aurelius in "Meditations" to the existential ponderings of Franz Kafka's "Before the Law." We've delved into the political philosophy of Plato with texts like "The Republic" and "Crito" and navigated the intricacies of Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" and John Locke's "Two Treatises of Government." Karl Marx's "The Communist Manifesto" and other texts contribute to the diversity of our intellectual pursuits.
At Let Me Ponder, we don't just read; we actively engage with the material. Our plans include lively debates on topics such as high vs. low philosophy, moral naturalism vs. non-naturalism, and the nuances of consequentialism and deontology. We dissect specific ethical theories, providing overviews of utilitarianism and intrinsic ethics. Through thought experiments, Ethics Bowl discussions, and literal Socratic Seminars, we aim to deepen our understanding of philosophy.
But it's not all serious contemplation; Let Me Ponder also embraces the lighter side of philosophy. Our Philosophy Movie Nights feature cinematic gems like "Fight Club," "Dead Poets Society," "Inception," "The Matrix," and "Groundhog Day," offering an entertaining yet thought-provoking lens on philosophical themes.
In addition to our regular meetings, we have exciting plans such as hosting discussions with philosophy professors, attending group trips to Rice Philosophy Conferences, and organizing philosophy lessons to further expand our knowledge base.
Let Me Ponder is not just a club; it's a community of inquisitive minds seeking to unravel the complexities of the world through the lens of philosophy. Join us as we embark on a journey of intellectual discovery, where every meeting promises to be a riveting exploration into the depths of human thought and reason.
