A zine (short for fanzine or magazine) is a self-published work.
Zines look like mini-books or pamphlets.
People do not create zines to make money; they create zines so they can express themselves--their feelings, their ideas, and their passions.
People who create zines usually make copies of their zines, so they can share their ideas with others.
All that you really need to make a zine is paper and a pencil, but you could use any type of art/craft material you want.
There are lots of ways to express your ideas in a zine. You could:
Draw pictures
Write a narrative
Write as if it is a journal
Collage
Draw comics
Etc.
Zines are easy to make and easy to share.
Zines give a voice to people who would otherwise not have one.
Zines can bring people with similar ideas together and build a community.
During a time when people are obsessed with the internet and what is trendy and cool, zines provide sort of a "secret language" for people who have different opinions and ideas.
There's not really a wrong way to make a zine.
Zines are a way to express whatever you want!
If you want to be an artist, poet, comic writer, etc., zines are a great way to:
practice
see how others react to/feel about your work
build a fan base
On this website, Celia C. Perez, the author of The First Rule Of Punk, explains the basic steps to zine making.

Every year, Houston has a one-day event to celebrate zines and DIY (do-it-yourself) culture! Makers have tables set up to display, give away, or sell their zines, mini-comics, or art!

In this video, I walk you through the steps of using paper and scissors to create your booklet.
In this video, you will see my process for planning my zine. I start by creating a web of possible topics. Once I choose the best topic for me, I plan out each of my 8 pages.
In this video, you will see me create my zine. I wanted to make mine similar to the style used in the book, The First Rule of Punk, so I used magazine clippings and a black pen to write and draw with. This style worked really great for me personally! BUT if you don't like it, think about what would work better for you! Express yourself in a way that makes you feel the most confident!!
** If you plan on making copies of your zine, do not steal artwork. Also, use dark ink! Light ink does not copy as well.
