Week One Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th September 10 am start
Week Two Monday 5th, Tuesday 6th October, 10 am start.
Level three 12th November 9am.
Level one/two 9th November 4pm (discuss with us asap if you are concerned)
Ako - doess your work fit where it should? are you identifying where you may not be meeting the standards? we will expect to have these conversations with you during the week.
Waihanga -
Mahi, mahi, mahi.
Tohatoha -
Update your blogs after your folio is done.
Ako - Be aware of your folio dates. Now is not the time to have time off without good reason, and the room as available for use during break times and after school.
Waihanga -
Be aware of how you want to conclude your work. go back to your artist models, and think about your 'why' - kaupapa. what visual motifs are standing out the most at this point and why? critique with each other and discuss this.
Tohatoha -
Upload photos of your work on your blog with decent commentary about what is going on.
These two 'Toby Mini' collections are our class lists of blogs for both lines two and three. We will be using them on Friday.
Ako -
Update your blog. ALWAYS. you all should know this anyway. How is panel one looking next to your work for panels two or three? is it fitting together sequentially? do you need new inspiration?
Waihanga -
Secure work to your board(s) with blu tak. Take photos of it as it is, plan next steps. If you need visual inspiration go back to your research document (1.1/2.1/3.1) and if that is not doing it for you, see me.
Level one students doing Tracy Tawhiao, you should be well into cutting up photocopied pieces and reworking them into new Art works, and letting them inspire you forward.
Tohatoha -
Friday is a peer critique task so make sure you have something to show for it (in pairs, which you are comfortable with, not teacher selected).
Ako -
Update your blog.
Waihanga -
Back to how things work as series and sequences on your board. Panel one is due this week please. level three - panel 1.5.
Tohatoha -
Friday is a peer critique task so make sure you have something to show for it (in pairs, which you are comfortable with, not teacher selected). This will also determine if we can keep you in the folio standard.
Ako -
Update your blog.
Waihanga -
What evidence do you have for the point two standards? make sure these are photographed and on your blog. one-one interviews with selected students will occur over the week.
Tohatoha -
Present 1.2/2.2/3/2 evidence as a slide show please.
A slide show that is a gallery of your point two work should get uploaded to your site this week please.
Use this as a template if you are unsure.
If you need photos taken, let me know and I will take them and send them to you
Video below is making proof (contact) sheets on Adobe Photoshop for photography students, in case you have been avoiding this:
Ako -
Remember this all comes back to your kaupapa. Remember we discussed series and sequences? this is what we will need to revise today before settling into the week
Waihanga -
Map out your series and sequences, fit a loose description to them and be organised.
Tohatoha -
Always update your blogs. Always ask your classmates what they think.
Understand series and sequences
Plan how yours are going to look across the rest of your folio
Cut paper/collect resources and plan shoots etc as needed for the week. USE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY
A blog post that has the linear progression of your given folio we cut up on Monday - a darned good reflection of what you can see and have learnt from this. No less than 65 words.
Ako - An update on your blog to re-assert where you are going and why you are making the decisions you are making
Waihanga -
Look to the checklists on the AKO section for clarification of the standards.
Tohatoha -
Always update your blogs. Always ask your classmates what they think.
Ako - Updates should be visible on your blogs. write as much as you can and definitely include images.(well done Robbie) .
Include: a key word about your kaupapa, a description of what you have done so far, what has gone well, what has NOT gone well and what your next steps are.
Waihanga -
Laying out your folio frewuently and recording it as you go.
Using the point two standards to generate your first and second series of works.
Tohatoha -
Always update your blogs. always ask your classmates what they think.
We will be using the critique process before the end of term in a formal fashion.
Ako - one key word for your kaupapa - distilling it down.
Waihanga -
1) Research - I will not let this go!
2) Folio layouts - we will do this on an individual basis
3) Next steps based on folio layouts and developments from the point. 2 standards
Tohatoha - your work should be visible ON YOUR BLOGS
Below are resources for all three levels, scroll down to find yours. Email with questions, rather than hiding from us! We have google meets for no more than half an hour at a time and no more than once a week. Pop in if you need the help, if you are not, please apologise for non attendance and work through the recording you should then be sent.
Ako -Practical work for folio's. you should have started your practical work already. If you haven't, you will be stuck with pencil drawing unless you took supplies home before lockdown.
Waihanga - I will go through your work and make sure you have all artists sorted. if you don't, I will be taking over a little and giving you artists to study!
Tohatoha - your work should be visible in your google drive Art folder
We looked at your 1.1 again and discussed how 1.2 could look from home.
Wherever you are at in this assessment, then that is where we continue on from. Some of you may well feel like you are starting from the beginning, which is fine. some of you feel ready to be assessed, also fine, just email us.
If you have only just started with your first Māori Artist, then click here
If you have covered the bases for all three artists, but don't know how to extend your answers, click here
If you want us to assess your work, click here
We looked at your 2.1 again and discussed how 2.2 could look from home - painters and photographers you have a resource based on generating lots of thumbnail sketches, Designers its all about the logo.
Wherever you are at in 2.1, then that is where we continue on from.
How to structure things from the beginning
Your traditional artist should be done. Look at the exemplar for your field. Does it look like you have covered the same kinds of things? If you are up to writing about the seven design principles and are unsure, then click here and hopefully it will help.
If you have covered the bases for all three artists, but don't know how to extend your answers, click here:
If you have done everything you think you should have done for 2.1, click here, fill this in, save as a JPEG and attach it on your assessment. I would also like you to screen shot some of your better parts of your assessment (NOT the whole thing) and post them onto your blog with a quick reflection.
You should have a base definition of each construct for your field sorted.
We will be ensuring everyone is up to slide 11 at the start of the week, then on a shared doc, paste your definitions. we are going to work out something between classes that is a bit meatier for all of us.
from this point, the intention is to work through as far as we can get, this standard. it is a lot of work, but it is UE credits. Please tell us if you are at any point freaking out!

Ako - do you understand how to describe a painting? do you know how to make a thumbnail sketch? What can you 'read inot' the work to give better depth of understanding to your inpterpretation/description of the art works?
Waihanga - I will go through your work and make sure you have all artists sorted. if you don't, I will be taking over a little and giving you artists to study!
Tohatoha - your work should be visible in your google drive Art folder
Practical work will be by negotiation. i.e. email me with your ideas and we can work through them more individually at this stage. It will depend on what you have at home and what you want to be doing during this time.
Ako - do you understand how to describe a painting? do you know how to make a thumbnail sketch?
Waihanga - your research will inform your practical work. you may be asked to complete practical components to support your research as we go.
Tohatoha - your work should be visible in your google drive Art folder
Ako - Technical constraints and concept base established.
Tohatoha - discussions and critiques in class, updating your blogs as necessary
This exercise was about creating a thumbnail sketch of this folio, using annotations to clearly identify subject, art elements and potential meanings of the works, and establishing what the series of works are that make up the folio. By the end of this, you should have an analysis of the work; you have broken it into parts and hopefully understand those parts. We now have to begin working on your version of this based on your kaupapa and the artist models you are studying.
Is your subject matter ready? You will likely need photographs and/or the actual subject to work from. identify and use one principle or element your artist uses and focus your creativity on that.
Consider your principle, element or device; how do you allow yourself to work from this?
Paint/print options - tonal drawing using pencil.
Photo/paint options - arranging subjects for a photoshoot, taking a minimum of 12 photos and creating a proof sheet,
Design/paint/print options - arranging your subject and looking for repetition, pattern, main lines to develop shapes from.

Ako - Using Art vocabulary to explain what you already see. Using the right words, as well as your own words.
Waihanga - using vocab lists as a writing prompt for analysis, there will be collaborative writing tasks during the week as needed.
Tohatoha - discussing and comparing your ideas is allowed. Where are you at on the checklists?
1.1: - you have two vocab lists to work from - one is Māori terminology, the other generic Art terminology. read through it and become familiar
Pair up with another student and read the vocab they have pasted, with their descriptions. What can you add to help? What questions can you ask to clarify?
What advice can you take from your buddy? What do you need to clarify?
Slide 10 onwards.
2.1 - there is subject specific vocab to work from as well as the 7 principles of design. This is what your writing is going to be eventually based upon. Make sure you take some time to review these links this week.
slide 11 onwards.
You should have a base definition of each construct for your field sorted.
We will be ensuring everyone is up to slide 11 at the start of the week, then on a shared doc, paste your definitions. we are going to work out something between classes that is a bit meatier for all of us.

Every second week, we will complete a practical workshop that you are expected to continue on with for the remainder of the week and produce an outcome for. This outcome should directly relate to your 1.2/2.2/3.2 check list.
Ako - Workshop one; choosing your subject matter. Support and develop your art-making. What is your subject matter and how does it relate to your kaupapa?
Identify the subject matter from your chosen artists.
How will this be useful? Develop your base approach to making art for 1.2/2.2/3.2
Tohatoha - sharing your process on your blog - brainstorm into reality - concept sketches, base sketches, first proof-sheet
Ako - Using your why/theme, you will make a start on your first standard. This is research. The direction your research takes should inform your practical work.
Waihanga - Understanding the standard, making your own copy and working through setting up the bones of your own document. Every second week you will be working on research from this and on this slide show you will make.
Tohatoha - Embedding own copy of research doc onto your site.
1.1; There is a distinct Aotearoa flavour to this standard. The matrix is set up to support that as you wont pass otherwise. Review your choices and ensure you are happy.
Complete your mood board. Aim to complete up to slide 9 this week. You MUST use the vocab provided to do this properly.
We are checking up on you! each second week, the sheet on tohatoha is filled in by your teacher and actioned.
2.1 focuses on discussing the methods and ideas that support the art-making you research.
Your document should be set up ready to go, review and make sure you have your mood board connected to your document.
Completing your mood board needs to happen early in the week. by the end of the week, we expect that you have reached slide 10, which you SHOULD in your own time review the attached exemplars of your next steps. Vocab lists are necessary for this standard too.
3.1 is distinctly heavier than 2.1. your focus is analysis. You don't actually have to describe what you see, but you might find it helps. You have learnt these skills in art history so use them if you feel it helps.
You are tasked with more independence in developing artist model mood boards. The instructions on how to do this are set up in your 3.1 document.
Your analysis will require six artists of study whereas level two only work through three. There is also background learning in the form of youtube documentary videos to process.
You should be able to have finished up to a definition of your first construct by the end of the week (slide 11).
We will be working across term two to complete the .1 and .2 standards at each level, within each field. By the end of term one, you will be assessed for both - 8 credits in the bank.
1.1/2.1/3.1 = research - there are specific constraints around this at each level and within each field
1.2/2.2/3.2 = drawing - again there are constraints. The work produced here should start your folios off at ALL levels and in ALL fields.
All work must be submitted as blog posts as instructed within each standard for HHS. It cannot be assessed otherwise. This is our hand-in process. some subjects stipulate that you print out work and submit it to the office for assessment, we stipulate this process. This is an ongoing process throughout the year, not something you leave until the last minute and throw a reflective regurgitation of words at, and hope something sticks.
By the end of the week we should be able to sit and compare where we are all at.
Ako - Our "why" is our kaupapa - the reason we do what we do; in Visual Arts, we want to give you the chance to develop ideas and expression intelligently and at an individual level, by developing skills and techniques in Art making.
Waihanga - Themes and workshops are the structural basis for how and what we learn in visual Arts at Hornby High School. This allows you to follow your own direction with the support you need from us to achieve credits in NCEA.
Tohatoha - Google sites and learner blogs are how we document the learning experience.
Level one matrix is designed to cover your bases for two standards; 1.1 research and 1.2 drawing. carefully review the artists on offer and make your choices.
First blog post based on exemplar under rewindable learning.
The work we complete over week one must be documented as a part of this post.
Level two/three matrix's are theme based. This year we have limited your choices to speed up process and get folios underway quicker. Choose your theme and then two artists based on your instructions for 2.1
You will structure yourself a blog post explaining your theme and Artist choices based on the exemplar given. If you remember back to the blog post checklist form last year, this is pretty much the same stuff.
This will be based on brainstorms and exercises over the course of week one. EVERYTHING must be documented.

3.1 requires an investigation into three constructs which ALSO need to inform board one and are additional to the artists you choose for your base theme. This will require about 4 pages of typed text with images along with contributions to our google + community discussing the constructs. Each rangatahi is expected to post 2 artists or sources of information as well as comment on each post made by the other level three students over the course of term one.

WEEK TWO IS A SHORT WEEK. THERE WILL ONLY BE ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETE ONE WEEK'S WORTH OF LEARNING. THE ARROW INDICATES A COLLAPSIBLE TEXT BOX. CLICK ON IT AND YOU WILL SEE THE INFORMATION YOU NEED.
If class time is not enough, you MUST complete this for homework.
Go back to AKO for level/standard specific Vocabulary resources
Taking from what you know so far about your chosen artists and your theme, you will be continuing on with, or developing a brainstorm for, a visual dictionary for yourself to use over the year.
First work shop - developing your subject matter - accessible, REAL (not someone's art work online that you are copying)
See checklist for 1.2
Like for like - are you going to look at similar subject matter for your work? Is it practical? We will work from a brainstorm here to develop your thoughts further.
Your progress will be posted online.

First work shop - developing your subject matter
Designers - you will be working to a visual symbol grid, where graphic stylisation is your new language. Gathering logotypes and logobrands will be a part of this so that you have something to inspire you.
Painters and photographers - you will be brainstorming more formally. By the end of the week, you will need to have a collection of subject matter at hand to work from. Painters, you might work from photographs you take, photographers you might want to paint a textured ground to use as a backdrop, along with a collection of 'things' you want to shoot (photograph).
Following the exemplar blog provided this week, you will be posting your work with the correct labels.
