The Americas

The United States

The United States in the 1930s was busy rebuilding from the economic collapse of the Great Depression. At this time, America had a small military and wasn't very involved in world events.

America followed the idea of "isolationism" - ignoring the world and just focusing on issues at home.

Although most Americans felt a connection to European democracies, especially Great Britain, they were not willing to go to war to protect them. If war happened, the USA planned to stay out of it.

Latin America & Canada

Since gaining independence from Spain & Portugal in the 1800s, the nations of Latin America (Central and South America) also practiced isolationism. For example, they barely paid attention to World War I.

By the 1930s, these countries were suffering from the effects of the Great Depression, and they had little interest in what was happening in the rest of the world. Would a new war change that? Perhaps, but it's too early to tell.

Looking to the north, Canada was no longer a British colony. Instead, they were a member of the "Commonwealth of Nations", which is a political association of former British colonies that still share the British monarchy.

If war happens, Canada, and other Commonwealth members, such as Australia and New Zealand, would join in the defense of Great Britain.
