School Counseling Services

Horicon Middle School and Horicon High School employ a full-time state-certified school counselor with a master's degree in counseling to support student mental health needs.   Parents may reach the school counselor by calling the middle/high school office at 920-485-2898.

Responsive Services are activities designed to meet students immediate needs and concerns.  Responsive services may include school counseling in individual or small group settings or crisis response.

Individual School Counseling:  The school counselor may work with a student in a safe, positive, and confidential setting to address issues that may impede a student's academic achievement.  Topics are based on the needs of the student and may include understanding feelings, changing families/divorce, grief, stress, social skills, academics, peer relationships, problem-solving, and making healthy decisions.

Small Group School Counseling is an opportunity for students sharing similar issues or concerns to work together in a small group environment consisting of 4-6 peers.  Group sessions usually last 30-45 minutes and are held weekly for approximately 6-8 weeks.  The focus is based on the needs/interests of students.

School Counseling Guidance Curriculum:  6-8 grade students receive classroom lessons in a variety of social/emotional skills, such as making friends, communication, responding to bullies, etc.  These lessons are taught by their classroom teacher.

Indirect Services:  The school counselor will advocate on behalf of students which may involve making a referral for additional services or consulting and collaborating with parents, teachers and community mental health providers.

Community Based Services

Getting a child to and from counseling appointments can be difficult.  It may mean the parent has to take time off from work, resulting in a loss of income.  It can also be difficult to find a counselor who accepts Forward Health/Medicaid or that offers affordable rates for those who are not insured.

Horicon Middle/High School recognizes these challenges.  In response, we have partnered with Church Health Services to offer mental health services beyond what is offered in a typical school setting.  A school counselor can provide short-term mental health support, but sometimes a student needs long-term therapy.  These services can be provided by a licensed therapist who is available on a limited basis at school during the school day.  Please contact the school counselor for more information regarding this option.
