Internships & Capstones

There are several work-based learning opportunities for students throughout their high school careers (full course descriptions below):

See Mrs. Ingemi in Room 217 for a copy of the Syllabus or to join the applicable Google Classroom with more information and placement opportunities.

Internship 1, 2, or 3 (CP/Honors 12)                                                                       .5 Credit/semester

In this course, students will create a work-based learning experience based on their specific career interests.  Students can choose to interview with one of our business partners, another faculty member, or create their own placements.  Work-based learning will be supported by the Internship & Capstone Teacher and supervised by an Off-Site Advisor or a Faculty Mentor (for teaching assistants or other work-based learning within the school building).  In many cases, transportation is required.  Career-readiness coursework related to professionalism, teamwork, and communication skills will be introduced during class meetings and assigned in Google Classroom.  Students will demonstrate their learning in the form of time logs, journal reflections, and a final project and presentation.  This course can be completed either first semester, second semester, or both.  Students interested in this course are strongly encouraged to enroll in Employability Skills prior to the Internship or enroll in both courses concurrently.  Examples of past successful internships include Bright Beginnings Center, Rose’s Corner, Total Granola, Memorial Elementary School, Hopedale Fire Department, Milford Area Chamber of Commerce, Active Physical Therapy, Milford Regional Medical Center, Bright Insurance, and Milford TV.

Internship 1, .5 credit - fieldwork approx. 4 hours/week ~ 75 hours

4th Quarter Internship (Honors 12) .5 Credit Pass/Fail

This 6 week work-based learning opportunity allows our high school seniors a practical, real world application of their learning thus far in their high school careers.  This is an ideal opportunity for those students looking to go directly into the workforce after graduation allowing them to build their resume and their network early.  Students will interview with one of our business partners or create their own placements based on their individual goals.  Work-based learning will be supported by the Internship & Capstone Teacher and supervised by an Off-Site Advisor.  In most cases, transportation is required.  Students will demonstrate their learning in the form of time logs, journal reflections, and a final project and presentation.  Students enrolled in this course must be in good academic standing as this course will replace their full year classes in the 4th quarter only thus allowing the student the opportunity to work for the whole school day.  Students enrolled in AP classes will continue to attend these classes until the exam and students may be expected to attend other classes like music (forms will be distributed in January for teacher sign-off and individual schedules will be submitted in advance for approval).  All students interested must complete an application, all signature forms, and agree to the course expectations by February vacation.  Teachers of full year classes may choose to exempt students from the final exam, offer a final exam from Q1-Q3, or integrate a 4th quarter project for the final exam.  This course will be added to the transcript as Pass/Fail and students must earn an 80 or better for a passing grade and credit.

4th Quarter Internship (no AP)  - fieldwork approx. 25 hours/week ~ 125 hours

4th Quarter Internship (1 AP) - fieldwork approx. 20 hours/week ~ 100 hours

4th Quarter Internship (2 AP) - fieldwork approx. 15 hours/week ~ 75 hours

Summer Internship (Honors 12)                                                                             .5 Credit Pass/Fail

This course will allow our rising seniors the opportunity to complete work-based learning in the summer after the 11th grade.  Students will interview with one of our business partners or create their own placements based on their individual goals.  Students will demonstrate their learning in the form of time logs, journal reflections, and a final project and presentation.  Final presentations will be completed in September after returning to school.  Students should complete approximately 100 hours of fieldwork.  This course will be added to the transcript as Pass/Fail and students must earn an 80 or better for a passing grade and credit.  Examples of past successful summer internships include Boston Children’s Hospital, the Hopedale Fire Department, and various Elementary Summer School programs.

Capstone (CP/Honors 11 & 12)                                                                            .5 Credit/semester

In this project-based learning course, students will plan, organize, and implement a research, leadership, community service, or “passion” project based on their individual career goals and interests.  Students will document their learning in the form of time logs, journal reflections, and an end of the semester paper and presentation.  This course can be completed individually or in small groups of 2 or 3 for either first semester, second semester, or both.  Examples of past successful capstone projects include the POC Podcast, Art Education: The influence of the growth mindset in children, Reflections of Dystopia in Modern Society: Do we have as much freedom as we think?, Mission Charms: Giving back to the DR, and Smash the Scale: Fundraising and Fighting the Stigma Around Weight and Eating Disorders (a complete list of project ideas can be found on Mrs. Ingemi’s website).
