Academic Web Searching

What is an academic web search and how is it different from a regular Google search?
As described by the Ed Tech experts from
Educational Technology,

"While running a search query about an academic topic through a generic search engine such as Google would probably render fairly decent results, it, usually takes digging into so much fluff before finally landing on relevant results. This is where having access to topic-specific search engines comes in handy. Such search engines do not only provide specific content tailored to the topic under study but their content is more likely to be reliable and authoritative" (Educational Technology). Find out more HERE.
  • Google Scholar - provides user-friendly access to scholarly research.

  • Library of Congress - Provides digital access to the largest library in the world with millions of books, recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps and manuscripts.

  • Virtual Learning Research - "Indexes thousands of the best academic information websites, selected by teachers and library professionals worldwide, in order to provide to students and teachers current, valid information for school and university academic projects."

  • RefSeek - A search engine that aims to make academic information easily accessible and "offers students comprehensive subject coverage without the information overload of a general search engine—increasing the visibility of academic information and compelling ideas that are often lost in a muddle of sponsored links and commercial results."

  • JURN- Search millions of free academic articles and writing across multiple disciplines.

  • Microsoft Academic - A comprehensive research tool that pulls information from journals, academic papers, journals, and other academic/professional sources.

Subscription Databases

FAQ

Common Student Question: Why is a library database better for school research than my Google search?

Answer: Library databases contain carefully chosen sources that are written by field experts. The content was evaluated and selected for inclusion in the databases by experts in their respective fields. Library databases contain no ads or advertising as they are a paid subscription service. Library database searches produce targeted and on topic results and their content cannot be found through web searches. Citation information is provided for library database content in MLA, APA, Chicago, and other style formats. In contrast, web searching provides quantity with uncertain quality and, often, questionable accuracy. Although many reputable organizations do provide access to free and credible web content, web search results must be carefully evaluated for credibility as anyone can post anything online with no concern or oversight for authority, bias, or accuracy.
