How to determine if a source is an accurate and reliable resource for schoolwork and research?

Consider the 5 W's - Who, What, Where, When, Why

  1. WHO is the author or publisher of the source?

  2. WHY is the author/publisher/source an AUTHORITY or QUALIFIED to write on the topic? WHY do you trust that they are providing you with ACCURATE and RELEVANT information?

  3. WHERE does the information come from? Can the information be VERIFIED and is it ACCURATE?

  4. WHAT is the PURPOSE of the source? Are they trying to convince, teach or inform their audience? Is there bias? Is the information an opinion or fact and is the purpose clear?

  5. WHEN was the information published/written? Is the information still current?

Check out the 5W's of Website Evaluation and How to Evaluate Websites for more tips on how to evaluate websites to see if they are accurate and trustworthy.
