Spend an evening with Tammy Goddard who works with Devereux Center for Resilient Children, discussing how identifying personal strengths can strengthen your resilience. Use the Devereux Adult Resilience Survey (DARS) and journal Building Your Bounce: Simple Strategies for a Resilient You (provided to the first 20 registrants) to take a closer look at resilience-related behaviors then identify strategies and ideas to strengthen your resilience compliments of Seven Valleys Health Coalition.
This workshop is FREE and open to all area schools, agencies and families - not just Homer, and appropriate for Parents, High School Students (16+), Staff and Community Members!

Join Kris Beard, Director of the Cortland County Child Advocacy Center in Cortland County, to learn about Human Trafficking which “occurs on an international, national, and local level. Child Advocacy Centers, to learn about Human Trafficking which “occurs whether you live in a small town or a large city, human trafficking can be happening in your own back yard or apartment building.
You will learn more about the indicators of human trafficking, the risk factors of our youth, and how to report it. Information about Cortland County's Safe Harbor Task Force which supports vulnerable youth will also be shared including how school staff, parents and community agencies can connect with this important program.
This workshop is FREE and open to all area schools, agencies and families - not just Homer families, and appropriate for Parents, Community Members, School Personnel, Government Officials, and Youth Serving Organizations.

This time of year can be overwhelming for many people. To help take away some of your stress, we invite you to join us for an evening of relaxation, de-stressing, and self-care. Come enjoy a free chair massage, practice mindfulness, learn about essential oils, make a craft, and more! Each participant will receive a small self-care gift to take home and be entered for a chance to win a raffle. Light snacks will be provided.

Local therapist, Karen Dudgeon, LCSW, will present on how to resolve behavior challenges that result in conflict. Karen will teach about conflict resolution through the lens of compassion and caring that can look like modeling self-regulation, healthy interpersonal communication, de-escalating ourselves and others, and collaborative problem-solving with the children in our lives. The first 20 participants to register will receive a copy of The Explosive Child by Dr. Ross Greene.

Presented by Homer School District, Amanda Hudson, LMSW, will bring her experience as the Family and Community Liaison at Homer Elementary School, a long-term family advocate for children with special special needs, and as a parent to this workshop. The topic is helpful for anyone struggling to manage tasks and behaviors with young children in a way that will encourage connection with and self-reliance for the child.
Understanding Child Behavior: Gain insights into the developmental stages of young children and learn how to interpret their behavior.
Setting Clear Boundaries and Routines: Learn how consistent, clear, and age-appropriate boundaries help children understand expectations and develop self-discipline.
Effective Communication: Explore techniques for effectively communicating with young children including active listening.
Managing Tantrums and Meltdowns: Get practical tips for handling difficult behaviors calmly and constructively, helping children to learn self-regulation skills.

Presented by the Homer Central School District and sponsored by Seven Valleys Health Coalition, local therapist, Karen Dudgeon, LCSW's, presentation built on the previous workshops she has provided in the district, this time focusing on the connection between mental health and boundaries including the unique needs of adolescents to have routines established, even during school breaks. Karen talked about the school expectations vs. home expectations, how to prepare for the transition to summer and back to school in the fall after a long summer break, and how summer routines can influence attendance struggles during the school year.

Mr. Perricone has been praised for his work in inviting his audiences to reflect upon their personal philosophies of life and how those philosophies impact their parenting, work life and other relationships. He was a Health Educator and Psychology Teacher in Maine Endwell School District for 31 years. John has a unique perspective appropriate for anyone, but especially parents, teachers and other supportive adults. His love and passion for teaching have made him the recipient of local, state and national excellence in teaching awards.
Mr. Perricone has been invited to speak in recognition of the May is Mental Health Awareness Month’s 2024 theme of “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World”. Mental Health Awareness Month has the goal of fighting stigma, providing support, educating the public and advocating for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness. We hope you can join us from 5:00-6:00pm before his presentation for a Mental Health Resource Fair.

SENSORY SYSTEM SUPERPOWERS
Join us for a fun and informative opportunity to learn all about our sensory system and the important role it plays in our daily lives! Participants will be introduced to the eight senses and how they can impact children's behavior, mood, learning, and communication. This hands-on training will provide helpful tools and strategies useful for anyone as we all need to learn how to regulate our nervous systems, and all adults need to learn how to co-regulate with children. It will be especially helpful for any adult who lives or works with children who experience sensory dysregulation.

A panel of local practitioners featuring Jennifer Talarico, LMHC, Senior Counselor at SUNY Cortland Counseling and Wellness Services; Karen Dudgeon, LCSW, local Private Practitioner; and Homer Central School District Family & Community Liaisons, Alicia Maroney, LCSW and Susan Williams, LCSW. Panelists will present on physical and mental health topics including: Student Support Services on SUNY and other college campuses; How students can take responsibility for their own health and how parents can support and encourage them; What does the transition for physical and mental health look like from local practitioners to college campus practitioners and for non-college students, from pediatrics to adult practices; Helping young adults access physical and mental health services on campuses, in the off-campus college community, and in Cortland County; College campus healthcare confidentiality for college student minors vs adults; Legal documentation (HIPAA, FERPA, advanced directives, etc.) for your adult child; Health insurance for your adult child; Preparing for and navigating the relationship transitions between parents and children during the transition into adulthood. Panelists will present overviews of these various topics and encourage this to be an interactive session addressing specific questions and concerns from those in attendance. This workshop is appropriate for graduating high school seniors, current juniors, and/or their parents/guardians and is open to the general public.

Presented by the Homer Central School District Family and Community Liaisons, Cortland County Department of Mental Health's Children, Youth, and Adult SPOA Coordinator, Cristin Marshall, will offer the "Talk Saves Lives" training, a brief introduction to suicide prevention. Suicide can be prevented. This presentation will cover what we know about this leading cause of death, the most up-to-date research on prevention, and what we can all do to fight suicide. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others, and how to keep ourselves, our loved ones and those in our community safe.

Some specifics included: How parents can help their kids manage anxiety including accessing appropriate mental health services, the ‘Wait Til 8’ initiative (delaying smart phones until 8th grade or later), communication between families and schools, and more.

This workshop will covered various topics of interest to parents/guardians and school staff alike and was the first in a planned series to be hosted by Homer Central School School District's new Family and Community Liaison service with the goal of supporting students' behavioral needs but is open to the public, including those outside of the district,thanks to the sponsorship of Seven Valleys Health Coalition.
