Number formations

This is a handwriting programme that teaches children the correct letters/number formations through a story about Casey the Caterpillar. It teaches children to correctly form the ‘shapes’ that, when put together, form all letters and numbers. You can assist by ensuring your child holds their pencil with the correct grip and forms their numbers from the correct starting point. Forming Numerals numbers have the same formations as letters, with the addition of a snail shape .

NZ Curriculum Levels Objectives in Relation to PRIME Objectives

Number strategies Use a range of counting, grouping, and equal sharing strategies with whole numbers and fractions.
Number knowledge Know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100.  Know groupings with five, within ten, and with ten.
Equations and expressions  Communicate and explain counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies, using words, numbers, and pictures.
Patterns and relationships Generalise that the next counting number gives the result of adding one object to a set and that counting the number of objects in a set tells how many.  Create and continue sequential patterns.

PRIME MATHS PROGRAMME

Cupcakes and Eggs

Students sort the cupcakes by color/flavor and count the number of cupcakes in each set. They count scattered arrangements of 8 cupcakes and then 8 cupcakes arranged in rows. The use of comparison vocabulary (‘more than’, ‘fewer than’ and ‘the same as’) is reinforced as students describe and compare the number of cupcakes by color/flavor (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla) and the number of eggshells by color (brown, white and speckled). They visually compare three categories of items in both a horizontal and a vertical picture graph.

What are we learning in term 3?

Dear Parents,

As part of our Term 3 curriculum under the Prime Math Programme, we are excited to dive into the book Cupcakes and Eggs. This engaging story will serve as a foundation for a series of math activities designed to enhance your child's skills in sorting, counting, and comparing (statistics).

Here’s what we’ll be focusing on this term:

Sorting and Counting:
- Cupcakes: Students will sort cupcakes by color and flavor (chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla). They will then count the number of cupcakes in each group, reinforcing their understanding of grouping and quantity.
- Arrangements: We will practice counting with 8 cupcakes in different arrangements: scattered and in rows. This helps children see how different arrangements affect their counting process.
Using Comparison Vocabulary:
- - To deepen their understanding of quantities, students will use comparison terms such as ‘more than’, ‘fewer than’, and ‘the same as’. They will compare the number of cupcakes and eggshells (by color) using these terms.

3. Visual Data Representation:

Students will explore how to visually compare data using horizontal and vertical picture graphs. They will compare three categories of items, helping them grasp how to represent and interpret data clearly.

We encourage you to support your child by discussing these activities at home. Ask them about their sorting and counting experiences, and how they used comparison vocabulary. This engagement will help reinforce their learning and make math a fun part of everyday life.
