Since SFS and OTS programs are centered on fieldwork, you'll spend more time outdoors compared to other study abroad programs. Packing appropriately for the weather conditions where your program is located is essential. Both SFS and OTS have comprehensive packing lists that you should carefully review. Check out the "Field Guides" written for each SFS site as well as the "Orientation Packet" written by OTS South Africa.
The HC Study Abroad Office recommends purchasing airline tickets that:
permit a “change of date”
are non-stop where possible
offer, at best, free cancellation or a credit to be used at a later date.
Other recommendations:
Purchase tickets directly from the airline rather than a third-party vendor (like Expedia or Travelocity).
Once SFS/OTS have communicated the arrival date to you, then purchase your ticket.
Please note that it's not uncommon for these programs to specify an arrival window!
As indicated in the Study Abroad Acknowledgement and Release Form, Holy Cross is not responsible for travel expenses, including but not limited to airline tickets and transportation to and from airports, which result from program suspension or termination, schedule changes, flight changes, emergency evacuation, or any other exigency. Such expenses are the sole responsibility of the student.
