Housing & Meals

SFS:

All SFS programs have communal living situations. For example, four-person bunk rooms are not uncommon. At the main field station, you will have a classroom, dining hall, library, computer lab, and laundry room. Depending on the site, a swimming pool and open-air porches with hammocks or chairs are also not uncommon. Learn more on the SFS web page for your specific program!

OTS:

You will be traveling throughout South Africa to various field stations during your semester abroad.  Your main field station, though, is the Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative campus in Kruger National Park. These accommodations consist of 2 large dormitories, a kitchen, dining, and lecture area. You can access the tourist camp to shop, swim, make calls, or do laundry. During the day, you can walk (in groups of three or more) to our offices to use the Internet. Learn more on the OTS website.

SFS

All meals are prepared by SFS staff at the field stations. Please note the following from SFS:

"SFS is able to accommodate most dietary needs, but students will find that the variety of food may be limited due to local availability, cultural practice, and cost. Additionally, during homestays or traveling portions of the program, options may be further limited. Students with a medically necessary dietary requirement should contact Admissions within one week of acceptance. All dietary restrictions or preferences (e.g. gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc.) should be noted on the Student Life Survey and Health History Form or discussed with the Student Life Department." 

OTS states:

"Meals are provided by our caterers, Shadreck and Co., who refer to themselves as AggyShadow Catering Company. The food is fantastic and regularly cited as one of the highlights of the program. The menu is highly varied, and usually, dinners consist of a variety of side dishes. The program caters to those of you with dietary restrictions (i.e., vegetarians, vegans, celiacs) or some food allergies, but please list all such restrictions/allergies on the OTS Medical Form so that Shadreck can prepare accordingly."
