Applications to study abroad during academic year 2026-2027 now closed
Housing is included in all Holy Cross study abroad programs and varies by location and program structure. Whether through homestays, student residences, local apartments, or communal living in a field research station, these diverse living arrangements offer rich opportunities for cultural immersion, personal growth, and meaningful connection with others. Embracing new ways of living is an integral part of the study abroad experience, fostering adaptability, independence, and cross-cultural understanding. Students can refer to the brochure for their individual program or meet with a Study Abroad staff member to learn more about housing.
Whether students study abroad for a semester or an academic year, there are always great housing options at Holy Cross!
Academic Year: Students approved to study abroad for the academic year cannot be part of a roommate group during the Housing Selection Process prior to their year away- for obvious reasons. You'll be away!
Fall: Students returning from abroad in the spring are encouraged to plan a "swap" by coordinating with someone who will be vacating their room in the spring. If you arrange a swap with another student, just make sure all members of the roommate group agree. When the spring preference form is released, simply list the person you're planning to swap with. Near the end of the fall semester, study abroad students returning for the spring will have the opportunity to participate in the Hall/Room/Roommate Preference Process.
This flexible process helps ensure that you return to a living situation that works well for you!
Spring: Students studying abroad in the spring may fully participate in the prior year's Housing Selection Process to choose a room for the fall. Before going abroad, they must completely vacate their fall room and remove all belongings from campus housing.
Senior Year Housing: The Office of Residence Life and Housing will begin emailing spring study abroad students about the room selection process after HC spring break. Students should check their Holy Cross email regularly for important updates. The housing agreement, roommate group registration, and room selection can all be completed online with a standard internet connection. Room selection usually takes place from late March to mid-April.
Note: If you expect interruptions to internet access while abroad, please contact the Office of Residence Life and Housing at 508-793-2411 to make alternative arrangements.
