Perspective Sharing

Day 5: Perspective Sharing on Institutions

Morning Focus Session Part 1: Holton

Students will meet in groups of 4 to share their mid-program reflections.

Morning Focus Session Part 2: Holton & San Silvestre

  • What did you learn about the institutions?

  • What are you still curious about?

  • What did you learn about the media?

  • What are some topics in our countries that fall in these different levels of Helen’s spheres?

  • Why do we think objectivity is important? Is it possible? How can the notion of objectivity be problematic?

  • What is the role of the individual here? What power does the individual have? How can the individual hold institutions (news media and others) accountable?

  • What is the relationship between media and institutions in our countries?

  • What control do you think one has as an individual to affect change in these institutions?

Afternoon Exploration

Assignment #1: Listen to this Podcast on Democracy and respond to these questions in your journal.

  • A family member mentions, “If people want to change this country, they should just vote”. Using examples from the podcast, explain how the issue is more complicated than simply voting. Consider issues of voter suppression and election security in your discussion.

  • Describe how some of the following institutions in the U.S. government may not be functioning democratically all the time: The House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, the Supreme Court, and/or the Presidency.

  • Describe some ways, other than voting, that people can get involved in transforming institutions.

  • What were some take-aways from this podcast?

  • How do you think some of these issues may or may not apply to other countries like Peru?
