Introduction to Institutions

  • Directions: For this assignment, you will be in a group of 3-4 students from your school, and will be presenting on a specific institution in your country: education, healthcare, or government. As a group, consider what you think is important for people to know about that institution’s role in your country.

    • Use the questions below to guide discussion/further exploration on your institution. You may complete some light research on these topics, but this is not intended to be a research project, simply to share what you think is important for your peers to know!

    • Then, your group will compile your understanding of the institution and create a brief 5-minute flash talk with a concise visual accompaniment. The visual should be more of a concept map or sketchnote with images and should not have lots of text. If you choose to present with a slideshow there must be no more than 4 slides. You will need to prepare the presentation, record it, and post your video to the assignment Padlet by Thursday afternoon (1 PM Peru, 2 PM U.S.).

Government

What is the difference between the state (provincial) and federal governments?

What role do citizens play in deciding who holds public office? What positions are elected vs. appointed? Are all citizens able to vote?

What levels of government seem to be most responsible for managing the COVID-19 pandemic in your country?

In what ways do elected officials work and make decisions based on the constituents they represent? Under what circumstances do they not make decisions that are best for their constituents?

How has the government responded to the public during the Covid-19 pandemic? How effective has it been? How do you know?

Education

How do children and young adults receive an education?

What kinds of options are available for primary and secondary levels and university? What features differentiate these options?

How much do these different options vary geographically across your country?

Does the government play a role in education?

How has this system needed to respond to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic? How effective has it been? How do you know?

Healthcare

What options do people have for accessing healthcare?

How do people pay for their healthcare?

How do people receive healthcare if they do not have employer-based insurance?

Who is involved in and affected by the healthcare system? (think about those employed/reliant on)

How has the healthcare system responded to the public’s needs during the COVID-19 pandemic? How effective has it been? How do you know?

You and your group should record your flash talk with images using an app of your choice. Voice Recording in Google Slides are easy options!
