The Chromebooks will be used by students to assist them with research, accessing resources, organisation, communication, collaboration, homework, using intelligence services and accessing all of the subject specific educational services the school currently subscribes to.
The devices must be considered as a sophisticated piece of equipment that enhances students’ learning allowing them to know, understand and do more and in turn improve academic performance and progress.
Unless a student has additional needs that permit them to use a computer, almost all students must continue to hand write their work, in their exercise books, just as they have always done. This is absolutely central to our principles. Students are still expected to sit exams in the traditional format, often writing for long periods of time. Literacy and the ability to plan and produce written work must not be overlooked or omitted from classroom activities. Most students will not be directed to create their work with online productivity tools such as word processors and presentation authoring software.
The ability to search for, find and repurpose credible information and educational content is at the heart of the school’s principles. This will enable students to increase their knowledge and understanding of concepts they are being taught and significantly improve the quality of their classwork and homework.
Whilst the school expects the devices to be used frequently, students are expected to use their devices when it is appropriate to do so, as directed by their teachers. It is not the expectation that students will use their Chromebooks every lesson as it may not always be appropriate.
The development of digital skills will enable students to make the most of their Chromebook. A comprehensive range of digital abilities will be taught and developed through the Google Gurus programme. A reward based system designed to teach students how to use the full range of Google services the school subscribes to.
Core services students are expected to develop digital skills and use frequently include:
Organising schools files and folders, accessing applications, managing file permissions and collaboration.
Communication and automated notifications.
Timetable and school events.
Access to curriculum resources and assessment tools.
Access the Internet.
Language services.
Access word processed teaching resources.
Access teaching resources and creating presentations.
Number work.
Personalising contact information and creating distribution lists.
The school subscribes to many other services in addition to Google Workspace. The most prominently app used by students is ClassCharts.
Attendance, homework, achievements and behaviour.
The school expects students to play an active role in organising the activities they are involved with at school. From knowing about events ahead of time, accessing resources in lessons and at home, organising their work, planning and completing homework, monitoring their attendance, achievements and behaviour, communication and accessing and responding to assessment amongst many other aspects of school life.
