I am a sophomore at Holliston High School where I play soccer and am a member of Student Advisory Council and Leos Club. Outside of school, I play club soccer and referee youth soccer games. I chose this project because I am passionate about criminal justice issues and believe in second chances and providing help rather than judgement. Improving our communities and reducing crime means we need to invest in people and families, not prisons. There is a lot that is wrong with the system at this time and it is important to me to be involved in improving it so it works for people and not against them.
We chose to work together because we share a passion for this topic.

I am a sophomore at Holliston High School where I run track, and am a member of Food for Good, DECA along with The Global Citizens Program. Currently, I am enrolled in Service Learning and I chose to focus on Criminal Justice during this class because I believe the subject does not get enough recognition. My hope is to shed more light on the topic because I believe that investing in our communities will help to reduce crime and open opportunities for everyone.
Our project is built off of the 16th Sustainable Development Goal which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions. There is a need for education and reform of criminal justice in communities across the country. In the case of Holliston and other local towns, these issues are not at the forefront because they do not affect a small town like Holliston as much as they do urban areas such as Boston or Framingham. However, it's still important that we know the facts and have skills and resources to do something about the problem. Our project aims to educate the community as well as create opportunity and resources for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Our community partners are Officer Keefe, the school resource officer, and Holliston Youth and Family Services. We plan on giving a presentation at town hall with our community partners to explain how investing in the community can reduce crime.
How can the community help?

What it is: Clean Slate MA is an organization that is working on passing multiple bills in Massachusetts that would allow automatic record sealing for certain formerly incarcerated individuals. This would make it easier for people who are not knowledgeable on the process to have criminal charges removed from their record. It allows them to more easily get jobs and other resources to live a successful life post-incarceration.
