Holbrook is a great place to work and an even better place to play. Take in a round of golf at Hidden Cove Course for only $10 or challenge a friend to a vigorous game of racquetball. The pool is available for lap swim or water aerobics in the summer and children love the zero depth splash pad. Batting cages, hiking trails, disc golf, archery and shooting range round out some of the offerings in Holbrook.
Holbrook is affectionately referred to as hub city for the several highways, interstate, railroad, and trails that intersect here. With so many ways to get to Holbrook - there is also option for getting out for a road trip. Whether traveling North, South, East or West you will find adventure. Las Vegas is an eight hour drive and you can make it to Phoenix in three to experience all they have to offer.
Holbrook is rich on history. From Chicago to Los Angeles historic Route 66 passes through Holbrook featuring the highways only 90 degree turn. Neon lights still glow over the now bypassed mother road. Swing by the Wig-Wam hotel which gave inspiration to Radiator Spring's Cozy Cone Hotel. Long before the interstate or highways Holbrook was a stop on the Pony Express and we continue to operate a 230 mile section of the famous mail delivery system. More than 20 riders on horseback deliver 20,000 first-class letters annually in this historic reenactment. Those in the 'big city' looking for a glimpse into the wild west were given a dismal report out of Holbrook in the 1880's when a New York journalist described Holbrook as the quintessential wild west and "too tough for women, children and churches." The town was run and operated by gunslingers, gamblers, drinkers, and prostitutes and at the center of it all - The Bucket of Blood Saloon. Still standing it gives it's name to a friendlier annual summer event - The Bucket of Blood Races - featuring a 5k, 10k and 50 mile cycling race. The historic Navajo County Courthouse museum tells many more stories and features reenactments of one of the famous shootouts to take place there.
Holbrook has one grocery store, a few discount stores, several convenience stores, a clothing store, a mercantile, two ranch supply stores, and more. Most everything you need can be acquired here in Holbrook. There are two big box retailers within 30 minute drive and the nearest mall is a 70 minute drive.
Whether you are looking to purchase a home, rent a house, apartment or room there are many options available to you in Holbrook. Landlords and realtors regularly post openings with the school district to attract high quality tenants and owners. Apartments rent for as little as $450 while you can find houses starting as low as $600 up to $1,200 and everything between. Holbrook is 5,080 feet above sea level situated on the Colorado Plateau and is considered high-elevation desert. The landscape is largely bare of trees and dominated by wild grasses and other low growing plants. You can see for miles in any direction and on a clear day can even spot snow atop the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff - 90 miles to the west.
Winters can be cold and there are some days of snow. In the past 10 years school has been delayed a few times but never canceled due to snow. Nighttime temperatures can get as low as 10 degrees but generally stay in the mid 20's. Day time temperatures vary with some days never getting above freezing to whole spurts of time in high 50's and low 60's. While mostly mild, if you are seeking winter adventure there is plenty to find with snow skiing, sledding, ice fishing, and ice skating available within two hours of Holbrook.
Spring brings in slightly warmer weather but we've been known to dip below freezing even as late as April. This last late freeze upsets our farmers and ranchers as it usually spoils the early crops. Spring in Holbrook, unfortunately is generally characterized as windy to very windy. The wind is more inconvenient than anything and rarely has much impact on day-to-day life - you learn to adjust your aim and swing at the golf course.
For those who avoid getting blown away in Spring are rewarded with Summer. The summer months' temperatures remain in the mid-to-high 90's with some days reaching the 100's. It is perfect outdoor weather and cooler evenings and nights makes for beautiful weather 24 hours of the day. It is the perfect season for camping, BBQing, hiking, biking, swimming, and all around living. The very tail end of summer brings in rain and lightening shows sure to impress. The old-timers say the higher the sunflowers grow during the summer monsoons the wetter the winter so keep focus on the wild flowers.
We purposely saved the best for last. Autumn in Holbrook is the best time of year. The days are warm but not hot and the nights are cool but not cold. This is when the A/C's are shut off and the windows opened to cool fresh air. Fall hosts the Navajo County Fair where people travel near and far for good food, entertainment, rodeo, carnival, culture, and socializing. The weather is perfect for enjoying live music sitting at a picnic table under a large elm tree while munching on a Navajo Burger and/or funnel cake.
