In order to be admitted into our chapter of National Honor Society, students must meet the following criteria:
Be a full time student at HHS.
Have attended a full semester of instruction at HHS before membership can be considered.
Maintain a 3.24 unweighted GPA.
Be an active member of their community who provides leadership and service. This can include sports, clubs, religious institutions, government institutions, and many more. If you have a doubt, please do not hesitate to email Mr. Mitchell.
Students must be in good standing for the current and prior years at HHS. This includes disciplinary action from the dorm. Since the National Honor Society is based on Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character, acts of academic cheating will keep a student from being invited to join.
At the start of each year, the NHS advisor checks the unweighted GPA levels of all juniors and seniors. Students who meet the GPA requirement, are vetted by the dean of students for any major discipline issues in the last year. Students who pass both of these hurdles, are then invited to apply for membership. Most years, a letter is delivered in school to notify students of their invitation to apply. This year, we might need to send out emails and/or send letters in the mail.
In the application packet, students are required to complete a few tasks.
Students must create a log of community service for their years in high school. They must have at least 15-hours for Juniors and 25-hours for Seniors. Community service hours cannot benefit the student or their family. If you have any questions about what qualifies as community service, please contact Mr. Mitchell.
Students must attain at least two reference forms from employers, coaches, community leaders, etc. The reference form is included in the packet and it must be sent to Mr. Mitchell before the deadline. Applicants should not have access to the completed form. If you would like to send it with the applicant, please seal it. References should not be completed by family members or friends. It should be someone who can attest to a students abilities in leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Current high school teachers should not be used for reference letters. They will get a chance to share their insights at a later point in the application process. If a current teacher is also a coach, community leaders, religious leader, Boy Scout troop leader, etc, then you can use them as a reference.
Students must complete an entrance essay for their final task in the application process. This essay can help sway the teacher advisory committee positively or negatively. Please take your time to showcase your abilities in scholarship and character with a well thought out essay.
Once the application deadline is reached, we start the final stage of our selection process. A survey is sent out to each of staff at HHS and they are asked to assess each applicant in terms of their dedication to scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A council of teachers is selected to review the application packets and the teacher survey results. Each applicant is voted on and acceptance letters are delivered to those chosen for membership. Students who are not selected, will be given an explanation for their denied application. Juniors might be invited to reapply their senior year.
