The Advisory period takes place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:55-8:21am. The goal of advisory is to allow students and their homeroom teachers to build community in the classroom and address topics that may not be included in core curriculum such as organization, coping strategies, conflict resolution, and other student success skills. The curriculum used during advisory period is a mixture of the Character Strong Social Emotional Learning program and lessons created by the advisory committee. The advisory committee for the 24-25 school year consists of Andraya Parenteau (Middle School Counselor), Ashley Roemer (5th Grade), Anna Houseman (6th Grade), Drew Waldbillig (7th Grade), and Abby Gunnarson (8th Grade).
The Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in our district have been focusing on identifying "Essential Learning Standards" for our content areas this year. The Student Support PLC has been modeling our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) essential standards after the CASEL model's 5 core competencies (pictured left). These essential standards are being explicitly taught in the Middle School during advisory lessons twice a week.
Our goal is that when each student leaves HLWW Middle School they will be able to:
Identify how their emotions effect their behaviors (Self Awareness)
Identify and utilize stress management strategies (Self Management)
Utilize steps for solving a problem. (Responsible Decision Making)
Identify the size of the problem when experiencing social conflict. (Relationship Skills)
Recognize the feelings of others and identify an appropriate response (Social Awareness)
In teaching our students these essential SEL standards, we are using curricula from Character Strong and Be Good People which are both modeled using the 5 core competencies from CASEL. Character Strong is a research based social emotional learning curriculum that focuses on character development using a variety of videos, lessons, and activities for each grade level in an easily accessible and engaging way. Be Good People is a Minnesota based curriculum created by school psychologists to provide ready to teach SEL lessons that align with CASEL and Minnesota State SEL standards. These lessons are taught twice a week throughout the school year in addition to lessons created by Ms. Parenteau and the advisory committee to address more specific needs for our students at HLWW Middle School.
