Day 1
We've arrived safely in Tokyo for the first day of our overseas excursion! The flight went smoothly, and the students all enjoyed the in-flight meal and entertainment.
After landing, we had our first meal together in Tokyo - a delicious Yakiniku feast! Yakiniku is a Japanese style of grilled meat that the students really seemed to enjoy. It was a great introduction to Japanese cuisine.
Over the next few days, we're looking forward to immersing ourselves in the rich culture and history of Japan. The students are excited to learn more and experience firsthand the unique sights, sounds, and flavors of this amazing country.
Day 2
We started with a fun food-focused workshop, where students made cupcakes and Japanese-style food keychains. It was a neat way to learn about the artistry that goes into food presentation in Japan.
Next, we visited Ecole, an environmental learning center, to explore the relationship between humans and the planet through interactive exhibits. This was followed by hands-on sustainability activities at the Panasonic GREEN IMPACT PARK.
In the afternoon, we toured the NHK Museum of Broadcasting to trace the evolution of media in Japan from radio to television.
To cap off the day, we admired over 5,400 contemporary artworks, including pieces by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
Despite the rainy weather, the students remained engaged and enthusiastic throughout our itinerary. 😍
Day 3
We started the morning by visiting 朝霞市立朝霞第七小學校 where our HKBUAS students had the chance to introduce our school and share aspects of Hong Kong culture. The Japanese students were eager to learn and our students did an excellent job communicating in Japanese, making new friends in the process. We even got to try some traditional Japanese children's games like hanafuda and hanetsuki, which were a lot of fun.
After the school visit, we headed to a sushi workshop where we learned how to prepare our own sushi. It was fascinating to watch the chef skillfully slice and prepare the fresh fish.
In the afternoon, we visited the beautiful Hakone Shrine. We learned about the tradition of making wishes at the shrine.
As the day drew to a close, we returned to our hotel, which offers stunning views of Mount Fuji. We're hoping for clear skies tomorrow morning so we can capture a beautiful group photo with the iconic mountain in the background!
Day 4
Morning Mount Fuji! 🗻
We have good weather to take a group photo and enjoy a hearty breakfast under the majestic Mount Fuji this morning - what a great start to our day!
We started at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, wandering through the stunning sculpture garden and admiring the impressive Picasso Pavilion. It was wonderful to appreciate art in such a serene, natural setting.
Next, we descended underground to explore the Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel - an engineering marvel designed to mitigate flooding. The scale and complexity of this flood control system was truly impressive.
Last, we visited the captivating teamLab digital art exhibition. We were completely immersed in the collective's mesmerizing, ever-changing installations that blended technology, science, and creativity.
Each destination provided a unique perspective and deepened our appreciation for Japan's artistic vision and innovative spirit. The students were inspired and energized by the incredible experiences of the day.
Day 5
Our destination for the last day was Mother Farm. We rolled up our sleeves and dove into a DIY Fruit Jam session. Armed with fresh fruits and expert guidance, we crafted our own delectable jams. It was a hands-on experience that taught us the value of sustainable agriculture and the joy of creating something delicious from scratch.
Our taste buds were in for a treat as we sampled the farm's specialty: Farm Milk Ice Cream. Made from their freshly harvested milk, the ice cream was a creamy delight that left us craving more. It was a delightful reminder of the importance of supporting local and sustainable food sources.
As the day drew to a close, we took a moment to reflect on all that we had learned about SDGs, city planning in Tokyo, and the integration of visual arts into urban spaces. Our excursion had opened our eyes to the power of sustainable development and the role of art in creating vibrant communities.
With hearts full of inspiration, we boarded our flights home, excited to share our newfound knowledge in our upcoming PBL!
