AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness program that is in thousands of schools throughout the country. The AVID elective class meets for one class period each day. During class, students learn the skills that are necessary for success in middle and high school, as well as the skills necessary for success in college. Students in an AVID elective class form a tight bond and create lasting relationships. There is also a strong emphasis on community service, an AVID student will be required for fulfill service hours as part of their grade in the AVID class. AVID students are also required to take at least one course per semester that is classified as an honors course, dual credit course or a course that is considered high rigor.
To qualify for AVID a student must fill out an application, be interviewed, and meet the criteria set by AVID.
The typical AVID student is a student in the 'academic middle'. This is a student who, prior to entering the AVID program, maintained average grades (2.0-3.5 GPA), performed adequately on standardized tests, and does not have any discipline or attendance issues. AVID students are self motivated, and want to go to college. AVID students will typically the first in their family to go to college.
