portfolios of pictures of New York street types, 1894, the
Chicago Exposition, 1893, and the Pan American Exposition in
Buffalo, 1901; loose photographs; family photo albums (not
taken by Austen); also original negative envelopes with
Austen's own notes; motion picture footage from 1929-35, 800
feet in black and white, 300 feet in color; and one of
Austen's cameras.

Robert Brooks Smith was a Brooklyn resident and
stereotyper for the family book printing business in New York
City. He spent his free time on the oystering sloop of his
Staten Island cousins, the Burbanks.
More than one hundred drawings, gouaches,
pastels, and watercolors of boats, the oystering business,
Staten Island scenes, and individuals, made during the
1880's; other items include an advertising card from J.R. and
R.B. Smith, Typographers, and a clipping, c.1880; and
typescript reminiscences of Smith by his two sons, Herbert
Lewis Smith and R. Harmer Smith, c.1942.
