Emotional Self-Awareness
This competency is about recognising one's emotions as they occur and understand how they influence thoughts and behaviour.
It includes the ability to sense, acknowledge, and accurately label emotions and to recognise the impact of these emotions on performance and decision-making.
Being emotionally self-aware helps individuals understand their emotional triggers and responses better.
Accurate Self-Assessment
This involves having a realistic understanding of one's strengths and weaknesses.
Accurate self-assessment allows people to know where they excel and where they need improvement or support.
It promotes humility and openness to feedback and learning.
Self-Confidence
This is a strong sense of one's self-worth and capabilities.
Self-confidence enables individuals to take on challenges, express ideas and opinions clearly, and maintain a grounded sense of identity despite external circumstances.
It supports resilience and the ability to handle setbacks effectively.
Self-awareness is a sequential process:
Sensing the emotion (feeling)
Acknowledging the feeling
Identifying contextual facts related to the feeling
Accepting the feeling without judgment
Reflecting on the reason and purpose of the emotion at that moment
Acting with appropriate, informed responses
This domain is critical because it sets the stage for managing emotions effectively and forming deeper interpersonal connections. Self-aware individuals tend to make more thoughtful decisions, avoid impulsive reactions, and have a clearer understanding of how their emotional state affects others around them. It also fosters authenticity and ethical behavior in leadership and personal interactions.
Reflect on your ability to recognize your emotions as they occur. Ask yourself:
Am I aware of how I feel in different situations?
Can I identify what triggers my emotional reactions?
Evaluate how accurately you assess your strengths and weaknesses.
Consider your level of self-confidence and comfort with your identity.
Pay attention to how well you understand others’ emotions and perspectives.
Evaluate your empathy by considering:
Your own core personality and others as well
What traits and behaviour that is natural to you and to them
Think about your ability to anticipate others’ needs and offer support.
