Designated peace zones need no upkeep; it can be a zone under a beautiful ‘ōhi‘a tree, a potted plant. Little funding or resources are needed to build and sustain a simple peace zone. The garden area is designated as kapu, for peace. The simple idea of creating a space for students to sit in the shade or creating a virtual garden is something schools can consider. Nurturing plants is nurturing our own selves – it brings smiles to people’s faces. The ability to care for and nurture a plant can also give people hope, for example, knowing that we can contribute to our families. Students can teach parents to try growing things and hold respect for those who grow food for all of us. Students learn to listen and collaborate with each other. They can keep a journal to record their journey, thereby improving their reading and writing skills.
