Donna Mitts

Program Assistant and Garden Educator at The Kohala Center on Hawai‘i Island

Donna helps schools on Hawai‘i Island to build their gardens, teach about soil, worm bins (vermicomposting), and offers hands-on training. Schools can boost community involvement by recruiting parents to transport students or help in the gardens. Food Corps volunteers are also valuable resources to build and sustain a school garden. The success of a garden is not just about growing a sustainable garden project – students enjoy their time planting and harvesting. Through H4 Club on the Big Island, students can foster their love of agriculture and caring for animals. School administrators may also help garden projects by including items in their annual budget in addition to getting donations from the community.
