This page was created for the 2024 Schools of the Future Conference to make Kalo to Kula resources easily accessible to Hawai'i educators so they can make Kalo to Kula happen! Mahalo nui to the many who've put in effort thus far to revitalize, perpetuate, and restore kalo practices in Hawai'i. May we continue this work with deep humility.

The purpose of this survey is to gauge teachers’ and school administrators' relationship with kalo in their respective roles in creating Farm to School learning experiences for their students.
Our goal is to use the data collected to support making Kalo to Kula happen at every school: lo’i field trips, kalo farmer visits, kalo planted in schools, kalo curriculum, testing kalo recipes, eating kalo dishes, and more.
Those who complete the survey will be entered to win $200 to use toward making Kalo to Kula a reality at your school. Funds can be used for a kalo farmer classroom visit honorarium or classroom poi/kalo taste testing.
This survey is a collaborative data collection initiative of Mālama Kaua'i, Kako'o 'Ōiwi, Kānewai, Kamehameha and The Hawai’i Farm to School Network.

Mālama Kauai, the mastermind behind Kalo to Kula, created tons of amazing resources to make Kalo for Kula a reality. This includes:
A Kalo Farm Field Trip Guide for the island of Kaua'i;
Kalo Field Trip Grants for the island of Kaua'i;
Grants to increase students acccess to kalo for taste test and cooking acitivies for the island of Kaua'i;
A Kalo to Kula Recipie Guidebook; and
Cafeteria & Teacher Trainings.

Poi for the People
A Kamehameha School program to strengthen the po‘e kanaka relationship with Haloa and Papahanaumoku by increasing access to poi and kalo for Hawaiian people. Through collaboration with strategic community partners, KS is able to increase purchasing and production of culturally significant crops, increase accessibility, and normalize consumption of Native Hawaiian foods.
