Our Labyrinth
The Labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. It is more ancient than Christianity itself, dating back to thousands of years before Christ, but it was part of spiritual practice in the medieval church.
By walking the labyrinth we are rediscovering a long-forgotten mystical tradition that is resurfacing in many places. The labyrinth is a powerful symbol of spiritual journey that was introduced into medieval prayer practice when the traditional pilgrimages to the holy land became too dangerous for most travelers. Both in that time, and in our time, people have found it helpful for meditation.
The labyrinth has only one path so there are no tricks and dead ends. The path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives; it touches our sorrows and releases our joys. So, walk it with an open mind and an open heart.
The Hillsboro/Leiper's Fork outdoor labyrinth is a 7 circuit medieval labyrinth. Located on the north side of Hillsboro United Methodist Church, it is open to all every day during daylight hours.
Guidelines for the walk
Clear your mind and become aware of your breath.
Allow yourself to find the pace your body wants to go.
The path is two ways. Those going in will meet those coming out. Keep your eyes soft and your heart open. Do what feels natural.
If you wish, pick up a marble or stone to start your journey along the labyrinth. You can leave the stone in the heart at the center of the labyrinth.
