Monday
I have officially landed in Sacramento, as soon as I got into the office I was put straight to work and my now fellow co-workers started teaching me the basics of what I was going to be doing throughout my time here in our states' capitol. I started learning how to answer phone calls I met the Assemblyman's Chief of Staff and his scheduler as well as his legislatives aides who my mentor Cynthia was one of them. They gave me the opportunity to go to the gallery and watch the remainder of session there. Later the member invited me to go and watch the inauguration of the Secretary of State. What surprised me the most was the fact that everything was just straight to business. We all have a common understanding that we each play a role to help everyday Californian's and that it is a very fast pace work environment that has that common understanding at the middle of it.
Tuesday
On Tuesday after doing some research on a possible bill proposal , the member invited me to the California Latino Legislative Caucus Reception I got to meet some wonderful legislators including, Assemblyman Jones-Sawyer, Senator Gonzalez, Senator Steve Padilla, Assemblywoman Boerner-Horvath, Chairman of The California State Board Of Equalization Tony Vazquez, Former Senator Hueso and many more.
Wednesday
After getting my email set up and getting my badge, I was finally able to start focusing on my project. After continuing to talk in person to my mentor we have come to an agreement on what should be my final project. It will consist of a lot of writing and research that will help the Assemblyman be able to make bills that will positively impact the communities of the 80th assembly district and hopefully the communities of this state. My main areas of research will include education, poverty, and immigration and what the state of California does to help those who come to the US in search of a better life. I will develop writing and research skill that will help me at school and in any field that I might become interested in.
Thursday
On Thursday I was invited to a breakfast celebration to celebrate the life of the late Martin Luther King Jr. I was lucky enough to be able to meet game important role models in politics like the great Willie Brown Jr. and to hear him talk about justice and his relationship with Martin Luther King and to be able to talk to him and for him to very happily say to me when he found out I was a high school kid " Keep it up young man, don't stop." I then took the chance to meet our Attorney General of the State of California and he also gave me some words of advice that I will truly keep with me no matter which career path I will choose to take.
Friday
On Friday the member left back to San Diego I was able to introduced a confidential document to the California State Assembly Speakers office unfortunately the information is still not available to the public but it will help communities throughout this state. Since the member left I stayed up here with my host family Jacob and Waynee they have been super kind and are super intelligent individuals and I am glad to be able to share a space with them. At my internship site it was super relaxed compared to other days but I was still working on research for my final project. I am excited for what next week has in store for me and I can't wait to go back.
