First Week

Returning In Person - General Information

We are so excited to be bring our students back on campus very soon. As we get ready for students to be back on campus after over a year and half of being away, we wanted to take some time to share with you what you can expect as you return to campus. Our goals are to bring student joy, connection, community and meaning work. Of course the foundation for this requires making sure the community is safe and healthy, and that we follow all of the safety protocols to ensure we are doing what we can to limit exposure to COVID. Our biggest asset in this work, is the caring and responsible students, families and staff that make up our school community.

Below are some important details and reminders to help you prepare for the return to campus. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out!

A Quick Tour of HTM - Specifically for 6th Grade

What materials does my child need to bring to school each day?

We want to limit the materials brought between home and school as much as possible:

  • Teachers will be sharing out optional supply lists soon, but we always make sure to supply students with necessary materials.

  • Students SHOULD bring a snack, an extra jacket or sweatshirt in case it’s cold as well as a reusable water bottle (water fountains will be reopened but many students prefer to use the water bottle refilling stations).

What will lunch look like?

  • Students MAY bring lunch or get lunch at school.

  • School lunch will be offered to all students free of charge for the remainder of the school year, families will not need to take any additional steps for their child to access our free lunch program.

  • Students will need their Students ID number found in PowerSchool to receive a lunch (we will help them find their IDs when they forget them).

  • Although meals will automatically be free for ALL students, we highly encourage families to complete a Free/Reduced meal application. Free/reduced meal applications may help your student qualify for a bus pass, can help save on college application fees, and can qualify the school for additional grant funding that will support your student’s education. Online applications can be submitted through www.EZMealApp.com.

Schedules and Calendar

What is the daily schedule?

Here is a sample schedule for a typical full day (Mon,Tue, Thu, Fri). On Wednesdays students are released at 12:45p.

When will we learn who our teachers are, and receive our class schedule?

Class schedules will be available in PowerSchool on Friday. Veronica sent families who have not yet created a PowerSchool login an email yesterday, if you have any questions please reach out to her.

HTM Calendar 2021/22

Before and After Care Updates

Unfortunately due to a staffing shortage affecting the schools regionally, our Zone program has been impacted and we are only able to offer a limited range of care options at the moment.

  • We will be able to provide AM coverage, as we normally would from 7:30a until the start of our academic day.

  • We will be able to provide supervision on our half day Wednesdays from the end of our academic day at 12:45 to 3:30p.

  • We will not be able to provide aftercare coverage at this time. Our typical aftercare program runs from from 3:30 to 6:30p. We will keep you posted and make an aftercare option available as soon as possible as we bring in people to staff this program. If you know of people who might be interested in working for us, feel free to share this link!

Morning Arrival Procedures

Before you leave home, please perform a symptom screening of your child.

  • Take your child’s temperature. If it’s 100 or above please keep them home.

  • Check for any symptoms associated with COVID. Please keep your child at home if they have any of the following symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.

  • Please let the school know if your child has symptoms or has come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID; we will provide additional guidance on the potential need to quarantine or to get tested.

  • Please send your child to school wearing a properly fitted mask.

Where should I drop off my child?

    • Children arriving by car should be dropped off at the designated drop off location in the main parking lot between next to High Tech Middle (see map) below.

    • Image at right shows view to HTM from parking lot.

When should I drop my child off?

  • Students enrolled in The Zone before care program, should be dropped between 7:30 and 8:15a. Students will sign into The Zone at the far end of the building (see map above). Once your child is signed in to the Zone for the morning, they are not allowed to leave our supervised program.

Afternoon Pick Up Procedures

When should I pick up my child?

    • The academic day ends at 3:30p, at which points students will be released. While we work to staff our aftercare program there will be no supervision for students after the school day, and we encourage families to pick up their children at their earliest convenience.

    • Families are welcome to organize an appropriate pick-up location, though we recommend using the main parking lot so students do not need to cross any streets.

    • Some students/families will opt for their child to take a public bus home, please contact Veronica Martinez for questions regarding bus passes.

What if I need to pick up my child early?

    • It is always helpful to let site manager, Veronica Martinez, know that you are planning to pick up your child early, so that we can make sure they are close by when you arrive. Our x-blocks and other activities take students to the parks in Liberty Station, which can be a 10 minute walk.

    • You will need to sign your child out and present a valid ID. If you would like a family member to be able to sign your child out, please connect with Veronica to ensure that they are listed in PowerSchool. They will also need to present ID when they pick up.

Cell Phones and Technology

Students are allowed to bring cell phones, laptops and tablets to school but they should be kept "off and away during the school day," unless a staff member permits students their use.

What if I need to call/message my child?

We ask that all families contact HTM Site Manager, Veronica Martinez, if they need to talk their child (vemartinez@hightechhigh.org, 619-814-5060. We will ensure that students have access to a phone if they ever feel they need to communicate with parents/guardians, either by giving permission for them to use their cell phone from a teachers office, or by using the front office phone.

Is there a dress code?

Students should be able to dress and style their hair for school in a manner that expresses their individuality without fear of unnecessary discipline or body shaming; Students have the right to be treated equitably. Dress code enforcement will not create disparities, reinforce or increase marginalization of any group, nor will it be more strictly enforced against students because of racial identity, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, gender nonconformity, sexual orientation, cultural or religious identity, household income, body size/type, or body maturity;

Students and staff are responsible for managing their personal distractions; and Students should not face unnecessary barriers to school attendance.

Universal Dress Code

Students must wear:

  • Top (shirt, blouse, sweater, sweatshirt, tank, etc.);

  • Bottom (pants, shorts, skirt, dress, etc.); and

  • Footwear.

Students may not wear clothing, jewelry, or personal items that:

  • Are pornographic, contain threats, or that promote illegal or violent conduct such as the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia;

  • Demonstrate hate group association/affiliation and/or use hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or other protected groups;

  • Intentionally show private parts (nipples, genitals, buttocks). Clothing must cover private parts in opaque (not able to be seen-through) material;

  • Cover the student’s face to the extent that the student is not identifiable (except clothing/headgear worn for a religious or medical purpose); or

  • Demonstrate gang association/affiliation.

Attire worn in observance of a student’s religion are not subject to this policy. This policy permits schools with a uniform policy to continue having a uniform policy provided that it is gender neutral and inclusive of attire worn for a religious reason.

Testing Requirements Notice

High Tech high is asking for all staff and students regardless of vaccination status to submit negative test results. Testing can catch infections early in students and staff with COVID-19, even before they feel sick. It also helps keep students and teachers safe and in school. There is no "one size fits all" way to test for schools. We have worked with our local health department to decide the best way to test based on what is going on throughout San Diego County and the positive asymptomatic cases reported in our community. This is NOT a weekly requirement, just a requirement to return to school next Monday.

Tests can be either PCR or Antigen (rapid test) and need to be from the timeframe of August 16th - 30th (i.e. no tests from earlier than August 16th). This testing window was recommended to us by the CDPH in order to establish a baseline. Test results should be uploaded here.

Here are a few options available for testing:

Option 1: HTH will offer FREE rapid tests (15 minute) at our HTM campus this week, we will meet in the lunch courtyard next to the main entrance. You do not need to schedule an appointment, but you will need to arrive during the following available times: These testing dates/times have now been coordinated by campus (i.e. all High Tech High Point Loma schools, and include more available times than I originally reported).

  • Wednesday, August 25th: 8:00a to 12:00p AND 1:00 to 5:00p

  • Thursday, August 26th: 8:00a to 12:00p AND 1:00p - 5:00p

  • Friday, August 27th: 8:00a to 12:00p AND 1:00p - 5:00p

Option 2: You may go to any county site or your healthcare provider for a free Covid test - see links to testing locations provided by the county. Please be mindful of turnaround times. They are typically under 48-72 hours currently.

Option 3: You may go to CVS, Walgreens, or another drug store and purchase a home self-test kit. These are rapid tests that do not need to be sent to a lab. You will have the results in 15 minutes and are around $20.

If you will be using the testing at HTM, PLEASE use the following link to sign a consent form for the onsite testing PRIOR to coming to campus https://my.primary.health/r/HighTechHigh?registration_type=student.

Safety Routines

Mask Wearing

HTM will require all people working on campus to wear a mask while indoors, this includes students, staff and visitors. When you wear a mask, you protect others as well as yourself. Masks work best when everyone wears one.

  • Masks will be required to be worn indoors regardless of whether a person has been vaccinated or not.

  • Staff will supports students in making safe choices around mask wearing and social distancing while they are outdoors, in accordance California Department of Public Health recommendations.

  • Masks will be provided to students if they do not have one, or if the mask they bring does not fit well.

See CDC Guidance for mask wearing.

Hand Washing/Sanitizing

Keeping hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. Read about the science of hand-washing here. HTM staff will support students in washing and/or sanitizing their hands throughout the day (between classes and activities, when returning from breaks or lunch, etc.).

Sanitizing stations in classrooms.

Access to hand sanitizer.

If Symptoms are Present

We will contact the families of any student who presents with COVID-19 symptoms, and they will need to be picked up ASAP.

Reducing Time of Unplanned Visits

  • We ask that all visitors to HTM limit their time in the building while students are present; if you feel you need to meet with a teacher, please schedule a time to meet with them.

  • All visitors must wear masks while in the building.

COVID Decision Tree

We will rely on the Decision Tree provided by the San Diego County Office of Education to guide the extent to which community members may need to quarantine or be tested, if they come in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID (see full diagram here).

How can I help prepare my child for returning to school?

We’re truly excited to have students back at school, but also acknowledge it’s a big change. Many students have been doing distance learning for more than a year now! Please know that there may be bumps along the way, but getting back into the routine of attending school is incredibly important for us all! We are grateful for your support on this journey.

Your calm and consistent love and support will be one of the most important parts of helping your child get re-acclimated to school. For more ideas about how to support your child socially and emotionally during this time, check out this podcast with Ms. Cat.

In addition, we ask that parents do the following:

  • Review safety protocols with your child. Emphasize the importance of physical distancing, proper mask wearing, and regular hand washing/sanitizing.

  • It may be helpful for students who have never attending school at HTM in person to watch the Quick Tour of HTM video so they have a general idea of where things are located

  • Remind your child that this will be an adjustment and they need to stick with the new routine. There will be some wonderful things (seeing your friends) and some tough things (waking up earlier), but soon enough going to school will feel normal again! Talk with them regularly about their day and help answer questions as they process new experiences.

  • Help your child stick to a sleep routine. Work on having a bedtime that allows your child to get 8 hours of sleep before waking up for school. Consider removing electronics from the bedroom to help your child get sleep!

Important Dates

  • August 30 - First Day of Student Attendance

  • September 06 - Labor Day Holiday (No School)

  • September 23 - HTM: Back to School Night 5:30 to 7:00p (Zoom option will be available)
