During my student teacher takeover, I had the pleasure of creating and teaching an original project. The students spent a few months diving into human migration patterns and reasons why people may migrate. Transitioning from our migration project to my official student teacher take-over, the students will further their knowledge of migration through products. More specifically migration of beverages across cultures, and their journey from farm to cup. The students explored the origins of these beverages through researching and chose a beverage of their culture to gain insight into their own cultural history. The students had a lens that focused on how community is created with these beverages. The unit started off on a micro level focusing on the self. This led to critically thinking about what fills our cup day-to-day to then analyze how those habits build community with those that share the same interests. The project then progressed to their examining local businesses in their own community. The students wrote a persuasive essay detailing how that local business supports the community and why we(any consumer) should support the local business. Wrapping up the project, the students created a physical representation of the drink of their culture and a pamphlet to accompany the art piece.
Here is the student project handout. This handout includes a detailed description of the upcoming project essential questions, products they will be creating and Important due dates. The back has a detailed calendar including all the due dates.
Mentor text analysis examining trade history.
Here the students are participating in a Know Wonder Learn about Psychology to start our new unit.
The students created a pamphlet to accompany the drink of their culture (Physical representation of drink).
Ideating is where the students find the most productive struggle, but the Identity work is a beautiful process!
We love taking lessons outside! Especially to calm the nerves.
Many tears were shed by students and audience. We also had our first rap spoken word!
Current students get to read their poems to the upper classmen, my previous students! According to students this is the most valuable critique, getting to talk to studnets who have been in their shoes. This time together allows for positive feedback and comfort when they are most nervous.
SoSayWeAll came to help us critique our scripts.
We take rehearsing outside of the classroom, not only to help with nerves, but to invite the school as our audience.
Even though the students were ready, they were full of nerves. Once they exited the stage they felt a sense of accomplishment!
I got the honor of teaching and leading a legacy project here at HTHCV. Students spent the first half of the school year practicing their writing and subjects such as literary devices to lead up to this project. They started by compiling a list of traits that define their identity. They expanded their learning through finding commonalities in their identity with their classmates by picking to perform In pairs a group or solo. They then looked Into relevant current events they feel strongly about. The students then started compiling their script for their spoken word. They performed a peer edit and some started practicing since they felt so passionate about their piece. We then had multiple rehearsals to prepare for the big day! The day of exhibition felt like a dream, students were nervous as was I. But we allowed those nerves to fuel us delivering the best performance. The students were immensely supportive of each other and It showed. The emotions ran wild complete with many tears shed.

We started the year with Identity work. One of our first presentations was an 'I Am' poem to better understand our book.
These were our core vocab words throughout the book.
We attempted to plant the seeds named In the book, keyword being attempted. Few plants sprouted, many over watered, lessons were learned!
