Overview

A variety of competitive athletics is offered at Highland Middle School for boy boys and girls. Highland Middle School participates in the Tri-County Athletic Conference, consisting of the following schools:  Collinsville, O'fallon-Carriel, O'fallon-Fulton, Mascoutah, Triad and Highland.  Fall sports include baseball, softball and cross country.  Winter sports include boy's basketball, girl's basketball, dance team and cheerleading.  Spring sports include girl's volleyball and track.  Students may participate in only one sport per season.  Games are held periodically after school both home and away.  Highland is also a member of the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) and the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA). Most teams participate in the SIJHSAA regional and state competitions.

Students must have a current physical on file (within the last calendar year) in order to tryout for any sport. Students must must also maintain passing grades in all subjects to be eligible for any program.

Our Focus

Athletic and extracurricular programs are an important part of a student’s overall educational experience. These programs serve as a supplement to the educational program and promote a standard for excellence. In addition, they cultivate qualities such as teamwork, perseverance, respect, accountability, integrity, sportsmanship, citizenship, leadership, and ethical conduct. These programs have the responsibility to develop a student’s skills both individually and collaboratively. Our focus then is on skill development and effort at the middle school level. In this, we grow the whole student and fulfill our mission of "Doing What's Best for Kids".

Fees

There is a $125.00 fee for participation in sports at HMS, with the maximum of $600.00 per family per year.  This cap applies to all extracurricular activities including band, chorus, clubs and sports.  All athletic fees will be invoiced after the start of the season.   Payment due dates are listed HERE.  Families that apply and qualify for free or reduced meals do not need to apply for a separate athletic fee waiver.  If a student receives free meals, their fees are waived.  If a student receives reduced meals, they will be invoiced for 50% of their fees. You may pay fees online HERE.

Eligibility

In order to remain eligible to participate with the team during practices and games,  students are required to maintain passing grades in all subjects:  core, encore, band, chorus, and EL. (Grade checks occur every week on Wednesday.)

Student athletes will be notified by their coach/sponsor during practice/games on Thursday or Friday following the grade check.

Students/athletes deemed ineligible will start a one-week probation period on that Saturday. During the probation period, students/athletes shall not participate in team practices/meetings.

Ineligible students are encouraged to attend tutoring during ineligible periods. Student athletes may earn back their position on the team by receiving passing grades in all classes during the next grade check.  Students may be dismissed from their team or activity if/when they earn ineligible status two or more grade checks during the same season.
