This lock case is part of a pair found near the Main House fireplace, perhaps from doors that separated Monroe’s parlor or other private rooms from the main hall. Whatever lay behind them, the lock case indicates a clear division of space within the Monroe household, with movement through the house controlled by status. Peter would have opened many doors for guests: leading visitors to the front of the house or admitting them to the dining room. This lock case, then, could have been touched by Peter on a regular basis. Even though Peter had access to the house, his movements were restricted by his status as an enslaved man. He may have been familiar with the nicest portions of the Monroe household, but he wouldn’t have been able to enjoy them.
