This latch is one of two similar latches found in the Main House, which may have been on a cabinet, door, or gate. There is another similar latch located on a gate near the basement of the 1818 guesthouse. Whatever the use of this latch, it indicates a desire to keep something closed. As an enslaved child, Garrett would have been carefully watched and monitored. Although he was probably curious about the house and the world around him, Garrett would not have been able to explore the house and all of its nooks and crannies freely – many places were off-limits for enslaved children.
