How are we developing the new curriculum at HHS?

Research-based curriculum

We spent a lot of time at a leadership and whole-school level developing understanding of:

-a purpose led curriculum;

-how the four purposes drive the whole curriculum;

-the importance and value of knowledge, skills and experiences and the role each plays in enabling learning;

-how to de-construct and unpack each What Matters Statement and descriptions of learning

Our curriculum vision and support framework for a ‘coherent curriculum '

Designing, planning and trialling: key work

We then trialled aspects of design, new approaches and pedagogy, using the learning to evaluate and refine our approach.

A high-level curriculum model was built on the vision for curriculum. It considered what key knowledge, skills and experiences learners should develop to progress over time within the statements of what matters and towards the four purposes

All of our curriculum development had a clear purpose in mind. A clear understanding of the purpose of learning and why specific knowledge, skills and experiences are important helps focus the planning of progress and learning and teaching.

Learning Journeys:

More recently, the school has been developing a set of  learning journeys for each curriculum area. We believe that it is important for our staff to have ownership of their curriculum plans; they have been empowered to create materials and resources that are engaging, creative, relevant to our context that enables the four purposes of the curriculum to be realised so that every student aspires to be ambitious, capable learners; enterprising, creative contributors; ethical and informed citizens and healthy, confident individuals. Staff across the school have collaborated on these   build on our belief of a coherent curriculum that re-visits and builds on prior knowledge and progression in knowledge, skills and experiences.They  they will be shared with learners, parents and governors as the curriculum begins in September, seeking feedback and adapting as the curriculum is taught.
