UNO Classic is one of the world’s most popular card games, produced by Mattel. Designed for 2 to 10 players, the game combines luck, quick thinking, and strategic play. The objective is simple yet exciting: be the first player to score 500 points or be the first to get rid of all your cards in a round. Despite its simplicity, UNO’s coloruful deck and fast-paced gameplay make it a family favourite across generations.
A standard UNO deck contains 108 cards, divided into four colours — red, yellow, green, and blue — each containing:
Number cards (0–9)
Action cards: Skip, Reverse, and Draw Two
Additionally, there are:
Wild cards (change the colour in play)
Wild Draw Four cards (change the colour and make the next player draw four cards)
Objective of the Game
The main goal in UNO Classic is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards. When a player plays their second-to-last card, they must shout “UNO!” to alert others they have only one card left. Failure to say “UNO” before the next player takes their turn results in a two-card penalty if caught.
Each player draws a card; the highest number deals first.
The dealer shuffles and deals seven cards to each player.
The remaining cards form the Draw Pile.
The top card of the Draw Pile is turned over to form the Discard Pile. Play begins with the first player to the dealer’s left.
Players take turns matching the top card of the Discard Pile by either colour, number, or symbol.
Example: If the top card is a green 7, you may play any green card or any 7 regardless of colour.
If a player cannot play a card, they must draw one from the Draw Pile.
If the drawn card is playable, they may immediately play it; otherwise, play passes to the next player.
Play continues until a player has one card remaining. They must say “UNO!”.
The round ends when a player has no cards left.
The remaining players’ cards are counted for points:
Number cards = face value
Draw Two, Skip, Reverse = 20 points each
Wild and Wild Draw Four = 50 points each
The first player to reach 500 points (or another agreed total) wins the game.
While UNO Classic has a defined rule set, many households introduce their own versions, such as:
Stacking Draw Cards (passing penalties along)
7-0 Rule (switch hands on 7, rotate hands on 0)
Jump-In Rule (play out of turn if you have an exact match)
These aren’t official, but they make the game more dynamic and competitive.
UNO Classic remains a timeless card game of luck and strategy, enjoyed worldwide for its simplicity and unpredictability. Its official rules are straightforward — match cards by colour or number, play special actions wisely, and remember to say “UNO!” before your final card. Although variations exist, understanding the official rules ensures fair play and makes the game fun for everyone.
